Case Reports[Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in Legionella pneumonia].
We present a case report with a 49-year-old woman with legionella pneumonia and fulminant respiratory failure. Despite maximal conventional respirator treatment with positive pressure ventilation, 100% oxygen and pharmacological treatment in an intensive care unit, further deterioration with hypoxemia and multi-organ failure occurred. The patient was referred to ECMO as a last option of treatment. Eight days of treatment with ECMO was completed without any complications except critical illness polyneuropathia (CIP) for which she was treated for an additional four weeks in the ICU.

Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) consisting of mouth-to-mouth ventilation and chest compressions improves survival from cardiac arrest. Bystanders perform CPR only in a minority of cardiac arrests. ⋯ In this paper studies on Hands-only CPR are reviewed. Currently, the evidence is insufficient to herald immediate changes to CPR guidelines and further research is warranted.

Comparative Study[Optical and video-assisted laryngoscopy for problematic airways].
Airway management is one of the greatest anaesthesiologic challenges. Direct laryngoscopy using a standard McIntosh laryngoscope has been the predominant intubation choice for many years. Videolaryngoscopy is becoming a widely accepted airway management technique owing to its potential advantages over direct laryngoscopy including a better view of the larynx, reduced tracheal intubation time and educational value. We present an overview of the currently most used optical and video-assisted laryngoscopes with a special focus on the McGrath Series 5 videolaryngoscope.

[Pre-collision pain and psychological distress predict poor outcome following acute whiplash trauma--secondary publication].
Patients with acute whiplash trauma were followed to examine if pre-collision pain and psychological distress were associated with reduced work capability and neck pain at 12 month follow-up. Pre-collision unspecified pain was associated with reduced work capability, and neck pain and pre-collision psychological distress was associated with neck pain. In conclusion unspecified pain (as opposed to specified pain) and high accumulation of pre-collision psychological distress (as opposed to a single psychological disorder) before the collision was associated with poor recovery at follow-up.
