[Whiplash injury syndrome. A prospective study of 39 patients with whiplash injury].
The acute symptoms after whiplash trauma can be explained by the neck sprain, but the pathogenesis of the "late whiplash syndrome" and the reasons why only some people have persistent symptoms more than six months are still unknown. Thirty-four consecutive cases of piskesmaeld injury were examined clinically three times; respectively within 14 days, after one month and finally seven months post-injury. In addition, MRI of the brain and the cervical spine, neuropsychological tests and motor evoked potentials (MEP) were done one month post-injury and repeated after six months, if abnormalities were found. ⋯ Cognitive dysfunction as a symptom of brain injury was not found. Stress at the same time as the accident predicted more symptoms at follow-up. We conclude that long-lasting distress and poor outcome were more related to the occurrence of stressful life events than to clinical and paraclinical findings.

Postoperative pain therapy in modern clinical practice still has significant deficits. Establishing acute pain services is reported to be a method of improving pain therapy. ⋯ The results showed that pain control was insufficient in 29 patients, and that side effects developed in 45 patients, included one patient with late respiratory depression. We conclude that acute pain service is essential in order to improve postoperative analgesia.

[Severely traumatized patients admitted to Aarhus Community Hospital 1994-1995].
In Denmark, only few studies have addressed the problem of severe trauma. In relation to establishing a trauma manual at our hospital we studied trauma patients requiring immediate anaesthesiological assistance. Patients from the preceeding years, 1994-1995 were identified. ⋯ Head injuries were the most frequently found severe injury (AIS > or = 3), followed by injuries to the thorax and extremities. The anaesthesiologist and the orthopaedic surgeon were involved in initial diagnosis and treatment in all patients, and beyond these a variety of medical specialties were involved. In the light of this study we have revised our procedures and registration concerning severe trauma patients.
