Case Reports[Nitrogen oxide inhalation in acute pulmonary failure].
Two cases of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) treated successfully with nitric oxide (NO) inhalation are described. One patient had severe sepsis and the other had trauma induced ARDS. The slow entry criteria for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was fulfilled in both cases. ⋯ Treatment with NO inhalation was without side effects and easy to administer through the ventilator. Both patients survived without sequelae. We suggest that inhalation with NO should be tried before ECMO treatment is considered in severe ARDS.

[Long-term prognosis of pulmonary sarcoidosis. 1. Prognostic value of lung function and symptoms].
A follow-up of 254 patients with intrathoracic sarcoidosis has been carried out after a median of 27 years from diagnosis. All patients could be traced. No excess mortality was found (80 deaths observed versus 66 expected). ⋯ For overall mortality respiratory symptoms were also significant predictors; this was the case even after adjusting for age, sex, x-ray stage and lung function (FEV1 & TLC) at presentation. In conclusion, no excess mortality was observed after a median of 27 years follow-up. Lung function, respiratory symptoms and to some extent X-ray stage at time of diagnosis influenced long-term mortality in patients with intrathoracic sarcoidosis.

[Metal detectors at airports can be activated by orthopedic metal implants].
Former studies have shown that orthopaedic metal implants have little or no effect on airport metal detectors. In Copenhagen Airport, we have tested ten different protheses for hip and knee arthroplasties and plates for internal fixation in two metal detectors. The outcome for the protheses depended on the adjustment of the detectors, whereas the plates did not activate the detectors. The security staff recommend that passengers with orthopaedic implants should carry a statement from a medical doctor.

[Symptoms of depression in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy].
Symptoms of depression and anxiety were measured in a prospective follow-up study of 36 cancer patients before and during chemotherapy by means of the Hamilton rating scales and the Melancholia Scale. These scales proved useful in the examined population. ⋯ The symptomatology resembled that of primary depression, and the brief rating scales for depression seemed suitable for screening purpose. Problems in identifying morbid states of anxiety and depression are discussed.

This study reports the causes, characteristics and treatment of injuries to the hand and wrist presented to five accident and emergency departments in a two-year survey of 13% of the Danish population. The rate of injury to the hand or wrist was 28.6% of all injuries, or 3545 per 100,000 inhabitants per year. ⋯ Only 2% of the patients were admitted to hospital for further treatment or observation and 13% were referred to a hospital as out-patients. The most frequent causes for admission were fractures (42%), tendon lesions (29%) and wounds (12%).
