[Child abuse and the lack of care. 1. An epidemiologic study from the Danish forensic officers, Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Medico-legal Council during 1970-1979].
The object of this investigation was to undertake an epidemiological study of the cases of child abuse and neglect, which resulted in contact with a forensic officer, an Institute of Forensic Medicine or the Medico-Legal Council during the period of 1970-79. A total of 901 children aged 0-17 years were registered in this retrospective investigation. One hundred and sixty-four children (51% boys) were physically or emotionally abused or neglected. 75% were 0-7 years old. ⋯ In about half the cases the abuse consisted of vaginal penetration or intercrural rubbing. In 24 cases strangulation was part of the abuse, but no fatal cases occurred. In seven cases, the abuse resulted in venerial disease, in six cases pregnancy and 68 cases of lesions of the hymen.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Smoke poisoning. Inhalation injuries from remaining at the scene of a fire].
In 1987, 87 persons died in Denmark as the result of fires. Fifteen of these occurred after arson. The commonest immediate cause of death in connection with fire is smoke inhalation. ⋯ Treatment is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Finally, the various fire-extinguishing agents employed to extinguish fires at present are reviewed. Some of these have potentially injurious effects.

The article contains a review and two case reports of pulmonary histiocytosis-X. This is a rare disease entity comprising about 3% of all chronic interstitial lung diseases. ⋯ About 25% of the patients show spontaneous remission, in 40% the changes remain stationary, while 35% progress and eventually die from respiratory insufficiency or cor pulmonale. Treatment with glucocorticoids and cytostatics should be initiated at high disease activity, with progressive X-ray changes and decreasing pulmonary function.

[Accidental explosions in Denmark when working on containers for combustible fluids].
Gases may be formed in containers for inflammable fluids and these may burn explosively if lit. Even apparently empty containers may contain sufficient quantities of gas to result in violent explosions precipitated by procedures which produce heat or sparks in the neighbourhood of the container. ⋯ Two of the accidental injuries proved fatal. The serious risk involved in handling and treating containers which contain or have contained inflammable fluids is, therefore, emphasized.
