Randomized Controlled TrialA pilot study of distraction for adolescents during allergy testing.
This pilot study describes pain and anxiety associated with allergy testing; tests distraction, specifically self-selected distraction; and examines the relationship between pain, anxiety, and engagement with distraction. ⋯ Knowledge about allergy testing pain, anxiety, and engagement with distraction can assist nurses in preparing adolescents for this procedure.

A snapshot of children's postoperative tonsillectomy outcomes at home.
To describe home outcomes of pain, medication use, fluid intake, and emesis 24 hr after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. The theory of unpleasant symptoms provided a conceptualizing framework. ⋯ Parents need to become partners in pain management. Recommend multimodal discharge teaching and follow-up phone call at home to ensure adequate analgesic administration and fluid intake.

To describe the relationship between pain-sensitive temperament and self-report of pain intensity following surgery. ⋯ Aspects of the pain-sensitive temperament may be important in understanding the variability in postoperative pain. This is the first investigation of the relationship between pain-sensitive temperament and surgical pain. More research is needed in this area.

Children's expectations of pain, perceptions of analgesic efficacy, and experiences with nonpharmacologic pain management strategies at home following tonsillectomy.
To document children's (ages 6-15 years) descriptions of their pain management at home following tonsillectomy. ⋯ Findings provide insight into children's perspective of pain management at home following tonsillectomy and methods for relieving their pain.
