Diagnostic Accuracy of Procalcitonin for Differentiating Bacteraemic Gram-Negative Sepsis from Gram-Positive Sepsis.
The identification of bacteraemia in patients with suspected sepsis is crucial for survival. A cheap, fast and reliable biomarker, which can predict the causative pathogen group, may be useful to confirm or exclude the presence of bacteraemia. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between procalcitonin (PCT) and the causative pathogen in intensive care patients with sepsis and bacteraemia. ⋯ Patients with gram-negative sepsis had higher PCT values than those with gram-positive sepsis. Our results suggest that PCT value may be a useful tool for distinguishing between gram-negative and gram-positive bacteraemia.

Recovery Profile After General Anaesthesia in Paediatric Ambulatory Surgeries: Desflurane Versus Propofol.
Paediatric ambulatory surgeries warrant a speedy recovery of patients without compromising their safety. Short-acting agents such as propofol and desflurane help facilitate these objectives. In this prospective, randomised study we compared the recovery profile in paediatric patients undergoing ambulatory surgeries who received entropy guided general anaesthesia (GA) using desflurane and propofol as maintenance anaesthetics. ⋯ Desflurane and propofol provided similar recovery profiles in children receiving GA for ambulatory surgeries. However, propofol was more cost effective compared to desflurane.

Fluoroscopic Comparison of Cervical Spine Motion Using LMA CTrach, C-MAC Videolaryngoscope and Macintosh Laryngoscope.
Endotracheal intubation should be performed with care when cervical spine (C-spine) injury is suspected. The aim of this study was to evaluate the movement of the C-spine using fluoroscopy during intubation with Laryngeal Mask Airway (LMA) CTrach, C-MAC videolaryngoscope and Macintosh laryngoscope. ⋯ The LMA CTrach resulted in lesser C-spine movements compared to Macintosh laryngoscope and C-MAC videolaryngoscope. In case of the C-spine injury, LMA CTrach may be preferred and may cause fewer traumas during endotracheal intubation.

Number of Prehospital Defibrillation Shocks and the Return of Spontaneous Circulation in Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.
It has not been determined yet whether the number of defibrillation shocks delivered over the first 30 min of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) impacts the rate of successful return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). ⋯ The delivery of four defibrillation shocks in OHCA most related to ROSC. The evaluation of the number of delivered shock during the first 30 min of CPR is a simple tool that can be used for an early decision in OHCA patient.

Efficacy and Safety of Using High-Flow Nasal Oxygenation in Patients Undergoing Rapid Sequence Intubation.
To assess the efficacy and safety of high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) therapy in patients undergoing rapid sequence intubation (RSI) for emergency abdominal surgery. ⋯ HFNO is an effective and safe technique for pre-oxygenation in patients undergoing rapid sequence induction of general anaesthesia for emergency surgery.
