Comparative StudyComparison of ER, PR and HER-2/neu (C-erb B 2) reactivity pattern with histologic grade, tumor size and lymph node status in breast cancer.
Carcinoma of the breast is the most common malignancy of women in Karachi. The current study was conducted with the objective of assessing estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR) and HER-2/neu reactivity patterns of mammary cancers for correlation with histologic grade, tumor size and lymph node metastasis. ⋯ ER and PR expression in breast cancers in the current study was found to be comparable to published international data, but the frequency of HER-2/neu expression was higher, possibly reflecting a young age at diagnosis. Assessment of prognostic markers for the clinical management of breast cancer patients is strongly advocated to provide best therapeutic options.

The outcomes of nephroblastoma (Wilms tumor, WT) in our institute and other developing countries are notably below results in most developed countries. The objective of this study was to review treatment outcomes of pediatric nephroblastoma in southern Thailand during the past decade and attempt to isolate factors associated with a poor prognosis. ⋯ The poor outcome of pediatric nephroblastoma in southern Thailand seems to be related at least in part to failures in primary treatment in stage I patients. Large tumor size and gross hematuria were associated with risk of a poorer outcome.

Comparative StudyIncidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in children in Khon Kaen before and after national hepatitis B vaccine program.
Hepatitis B virus infection is one of the most important risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatitis B vaccination has been obligatory in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) in Khon Kaen since 1990. ⋯ The incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma is significantly lower in Thai children who receive hepatitis B vaccine at birth.

The cost-effectiveness of a quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine in Taiwan.
A quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV 6/11/16/18) vaccine has recently received regulatory approval in Taiwan for the prevention of cervical carcinoma, high-grade cervical dysplasia (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 2/3 [CIN 2/3]), low-grade cervical dysplasia (CIN 1), high-grade vulvar and vaginal dysplasia, and external genital warts. ⋯ The results from this model suggest that in Taiwan, prophylactic HPV 6/11/16/18 vaccination of females can: 1) substantially reduce genital warts, CIN, and cervical cancer; 2) improve quality of life and survival; and 3) be cost-effective when implemented as a vaccination strategy that includes a temporary catch-up program.

Factors related to starting and continuing smoking among senior high school boys in Fukuoka, Japan.
The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence starting and quitting smoking among Japanese male adolescents aged 15-18. Two thousand and twelve senior high school boys in Fukuoka City, Japan, answered unsigned self-administrated anonymous questionnaires in July 2001. Odds ratios (ORs) and their 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were computed to assess the strength of associations between students' smoking status and alcohol consumption habits. ⋯ This study suggested that drinking habits started earlier than smoking habits among adolescents. Many students had already experienced drinking before admission to senior high school, while the experience of smoking mostly typically started after admission to high school. These data show the urgency of developing anti-smoking educational programs that could be developed and introduced prior to admission to high school.
