Hydronephrosis leads to deterioration of renal function. As urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (U-NAG) activity is considered a sensitive marker of renal tubular impairment, our aim was to measure U-NAG in children with hydronephrosis and to look for a relationship among selected clinical parameters. ⋯ U-NAG/Cr is increased in children with hydronephrosis grade 1-4, and there is no relationship with the grade of hydronephrosis. U-NAG is a useful marker of renal tubular dysfunction, however its relationship with the degree of kidney damage in patients with hydronephrosis should be considered as doubtful.

To characterize and determine whether patients with recurrent abdominal symptoms and associated ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) (Dietl's crisis) are effectively treated by pyeloplasty and to determine criteria for evaluating UPJO in childhood abdominal pain. ⋯ Children with Dietl's crisis often suffer a delay in diagnosis; the clinical entity appears to be under-diagnosed. Renal parenchyma is typically preserved, and there is a paucity of associated urologic complaints. Once properly diagnosed, patients are well served by a pyeloplasty. Children with periumbilical pain and vomiting, particularly males, would benefit from ultrasound imaging.

This work evaluates the results of ureteroscopic treatment of impacted ureteral stones with a pneumatic lithotripter. ⋯ Ureteroscopy for impacted ureteral calculi is associated with a higher incidence of ureteral perforation and stricture. Ureteroscopy of proximal ureteral calculi is associated with a high risk of perforation, when compared to mid or distal ureteral calculi. Ureteral perforation at the site of the stone seems to be the primary risk factor for stricture formation in these cases.

To demonstrate the main aspects of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of 43 patients with gunshot wounds to the penis. ⋯ Penile lesions from gunshot wounds should be treated with immediate surgical intervention. In exceptional situations featuring superficial lesions only conservative treatment may be applied.

We aimed to investigate the rate of urinary retention after knee arthroplasty, the various factors involved in predicting those at risk for retention and to assess the impact of retention and catheterization on joint sepsis. ⋯ This study supports the use of indwelling urinary catheterization for patients developing urinary retention after total knee arthroplasty.
