The role of patient's profile and allogeneic blood transfusion in development of post-cardiac surgery infections: a retrospective study.
We aimed to investigate the association of patient characteristics and allogeneic blood transfusion products in development of post-cardiac surgery nosocomial infections. ⋯ Our data showed that post-cardiac surgery infections occur more frequently in patients with predetermined risk factors. The amount of blood transfusions was integrally related to every type of postoperative infection.

Outcomes and prognostic factors of non-small-cell lung cancer with lymph node involvement treated with induction treatment and surgical resection.
Induction therapy (IT) has gained popularity in recent years, becoming a standard of treatment in resectable lymph node-positive NSCLC. IT aims to downstage the disease (shrinkage of tumour and clearance of lymph node-metastases), clear distant micrometastases and prolong survival. Potential disadvantages are increased morbidity and/or mortality after surgery and risk of progression of disease that could have been initially resected. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes and prognostic factors in a series of patients with lymph node-positive NSCLC receiving IT followed by surgery. ⋯ The use of IT for lymph node-positive NSCLC seems justified by low morbidity and/or mortality and good survival rates. Patients with response to IT showed greater benefit in the long term.

ReviewExternal cardiac compression during cardiopulmonary resuscitation of patients with left ventricular assist devices.
A best evidence topic was written according to a structured protocol to determine whether there is evidence that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by compressing the chest is safe and effective in patients with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Manufacturers warn of a possible risk of device dislodgement if the chest is compressed. AMED, EMBASE, MEDLINE, BNI and CINAHL were searched from inception to March 2014. ⋯ The efficacy of chest compressions in this patient population has not yet been investigated. Further research is required to address both the safety and efficacy of chest compressions in this population. Urgent presentation and publication of further evidence will inform future guidance.

The application of single-lumen endotracheal tube anaesthesia with artificial pneumothorax in thoracolaparoscopic oesophagectomy.
Double-lumen endotracheal tube (DLET) anaesthesia is the commonly used method in minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIE). However, DLET intubation does have its disadvantages. ⋯ In this report, a retrospective analysis was performed on 42 consecutive patients who underwent MIE using single-lumen endotracheal tube (SLET) anaesthesia with CO2 artificial pneumothorax compared with 81 patients who underwent the same procedure with DLET intubation. Our findings showed that SLET intubation with artificial pneumothorax by CO2 insufflation is a feasible and safe method for MIE procedures.
