Disparities in Postpartum Contraceptive Counseling and Provision Among Mothers of Preterm Infants.
Use of effective contraception could be one method to decrease recurrent preterm birth by increasing intervals between pregnancies. We assessed correlates of contraceptive counseling and uptake among women who delivered preterm. ⋯ Although all women in this cohort were at risk of recurrent preterm birth, counseling about contraception after a preterm birth (<32 weeks) was not universal. Women with multiple risk factors for recurrent preterm birth, such as multiparity and public insurance, were more likely to have received documented contraceptive counseling and highly effective contraceptives.

Diabetes During Pregnancy: Surveillance, Preconception Care, and Postpartum Care.
Diabetes during pregnancy can adversely affect the health of women and infants. In this report, we provide an overview of the state of the science, and highlight Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) activities related to (1) surveillance of preexisting and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM); (2) preconception care for women with preexisting diabetes; (3) postpartum diabetes screening among women with GDM-affected pregnancies; and (4) preventing the progression to Type 2 diabetes among women with GDM-affected pregnancies through lifestyle intervention programs. Improving preconception care, increasing postpartum diabetes screening rates, and promoting lifestyle interventions in the postpartum period all provide opportunities to improve the health of women and their infants.

Food Insecurity and Obesity: Exploring the Role of Social Support.
Women are disproportionately affected by both obesity and food insecurity. Food insecurity occurs when there is limited ability to acquire adequate foods. It is unknown whether social support can reduce the effect of food insecurity on increased obesity. This study seeks to determine whether social support modifies the relationship between food insecurity and obesity. ⋯ Women reporting food insecurity reported lower levels of social support and were more likely to experience obesity. Interventions to reduce obesity in women who are food insecure must consider the limited resources available to these women.

Achieving Appropriate Gestational Weight Gain: The Role of Healthcare Provider Advice.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) revised gestational weight gain recommendations in 2009. We examined associations between healthcare provider advice about gestational weight gain and inadequate or excessive weight gain, stratified by prepregnancy body mass index category. ⋯ Few women reported receiving IOM-consistent advice; not receiving IOM-consistent advice put women at-risk for weight gain outside recommendations. Strategies that raise awareness of IOM recommendations and address barriers to providing advice are needed.

Paternal Acculturation and Maternal Health Behaviors: Influence of Father's Ethnicity and Place of Birth.
Studies show disparities in maternal health behaviors according to acculturation, but whether paternal factors influence these patterns is unknown. We assessed the relationships between fathers' ethnicity and place of birth with maternal smoking during pregnancy and breastfeeding initiation overall and for 30 major ethnic groups. ⋯ Our findings offer new insight into the social pathways by which acculturation impacts maternal health behaviors and add to growing evidence that fathers are valuable to maternal health. Future efforts to understand how acculturation results in poorer maternal health behaviors should account for paternal influences.
