State-Identified Implementation Strategies to Increase Uptake of Immediate Postpartum Long-Acting Reversible Contraception Policies.
In 2014, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) convened a multistate Immediate Postpartum Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Learning Community to facilitate cross-state collaboration in implementation of policies. The Learning Community model was based on systems change, through multistate peer-to-peer learning and strategy-sharing activities. This study uses interview data from 13 participating state teams to identify state-implemented strategies within defined domains that support policy implementation. ⋯ Implementing immediate postpartum LARC policies in states involves leveraging partnerships to develop and implement strategies. Identifying champions, piloting programs, and collecting facility-level evaluation data are scalable activities that may strengthen state efforts to improve access to immediate postpartum LARC, a public health service for preventing short interbirth intervals and unintended pregnancy among postpartum women.

Trends in Geographic Rates of HIV Diagnoses Among Black Females in the United States, 2010-2015.
HIV diagnoses among females in the United States declined 22% from 2010 to 2015, including a 27% decline in diagnoses among black females. Despite this progress, disparities persist. Black females accounted for 60% of new HIV diagnoses among females in 2015. Geographic disparities also exist. This article describes geographic differences in HIV diagnoses among black females in the United States, from 2010 to 2015. ⋯ HIV diagnosis rates decreased nationally among black females, but the decreases were not uniform within regions or across the United States. Some states experienced increases, and black females in the South and Northeast remain disproportionately affected. Additional research is needed to ascertain factors associated with the increases to continue progress toward reducing HIV-related disparities among females in the United States.

No Room to "Lean In": A Qualitative Study on Gendered Barriers to Promotion and Leadership.
The gender gap in professorship and leadership roles persists in academic medicine, whereas reasons for these disparities remain unclear. ⋯ A proposed framework depicts male and female faculty's concerns on a continuum. No Obstacle and Process Concerns were relatively gender neutral, whereas large gender disparities occurred within the Barriers to Success theme. Women's barriers largely revolved around internal obstacles (I can't do any more), and men's barriers largely revolved around external factors (leaders are impeding my progress). Resources are needed to mitigate work overload specifically for female faculty, and to ensure that all faculty are both engaged in advanced career opportunities and encouraged to pursue leadership positions.

Organizational Savvy: Critical to Career Development in Academic Medicine.
Organizational savvy is critical to career development, but is rarely discussed as a learnable skill. Drawing on >45 years of working closely with Academic Health Center professionals, the author offers an introduction to navigating organizational dynamics that will be especially valuable to women, as they tend to be less effectively mentored than men; mentors may also find this guide of use in coaching these skills. Common misconceptions that interfere with acquiring organizational savvy include assuming that academic medicine is a meritocracy, that hard work will assure success, and that disagreements are personal. ⋯ Strategies suggested for developing a political compass focus on building relationships, learning from surprises and disappointments, facilitating dialogue with open-ended questions, and handling sensitive topics as they arise. The author opens with a case illustrating common new faculty dilemmas and closes with examples applying the mentioned recommendations. Becoming more organizationally savvy helps professionals advance not only their own careers but also improvements in their institutions.
