[Oxygen extraction as a predictor of mortality in patients on high frequency ventilation].
The high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) may reduce cardiac output. The haemodynamics were analysed and predictors of mortality identified. ⋯ HFOV improves haemodynamics. The model at 12 hours is the best predictor of death.

To assess the usefulness of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) measurement, by the intra-vesical method, in order to identify those patients at risk of developing intra-abdominal hypertension, as well as to analyse the factors that affect the IAP, and to determine their influence on the prognosis in critically ill patients. ⋯ IAP monitoring can be useful to diagnose and to promptly treat intra-abdominal hypertension, and thus to prevent the abdominal compartment syndrome. Therefore, it should be measured in critically ill children with abdominal pathology.

[Recommendations for respiratory support in the newborn].
The recommendations included in this document will be part a series of updated reviews of the literature on respiratory support in the newborn infant. These recommendations are structured into twelve modules, with modules 4, 5, and 6 presented here. ⋯ They represent a summary of the published papers on each specific topic, and of the clinical experience of each one of the members of the group. Each module includes a summary of the scientific evidence available, graded into 4 levels of recommendations.

Family members of child patients have traditionally not been allowed to be present during invasive procedures. ⋯ In our experience, family presence during invasive procedures is possible, and we have found this to be beneficial to the child. We also found that both family members and healthcare professionals were accepting and also satisfied with this new practice policy.
