Patients arriving in Paediatric Emergency Departments due to alcohol abuse is fairly common. The aim of this study is to determine the profile of the patients seen in the emergency room for acute ethanol intoxication. ⋯ The profile of the patient who arrives to emergency department with acute ethanol intoxication is a teenager who is seen on holiday nights, after a consumption of high proof alcoholic drinks, presents a moderate intoxication, and does not require hospitalisation.

The objective was to identify predictive factors for non-invasive ventilation (NIV) failure and to describe its use in bronchiolitis. ⋯ NIV has a high success rate in bronchiolitis. The main parameters which can predict NIV success are the absence of a predisposing condition and a higher HR decrease in the first hour.

To analyse the prognostic factors for complications in children with bronchiolitis admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). ⋯ Children with bronchiolitis admitted into the PICU had a high frequency of complications, often needed mechanical ventilation and had long stays in the PICU, but the mortality is low. The best prognostic factors on admission into the PICU were the acute respiratory insufficiency score, the presence of heart disease and were premature at birth.

The daily care of a diabetic (IDDM) child is essential for the short and long term evolution of the disease, and must include the hours the child spends in school. The presence of Trained personnel are needed who will be able to intervene in time if a serious complication, such as hypoglycemia, occurs. Their presence can help to ensure correct control of the disease and avoid long term complications. ⋯ The school integration and acceptance of pupils with IDDM is good, according to both teachers and parents. Children with IDDM take responsibility for their disease at an early age and are able to develop certain skills. However they still need help, which they get from their family even during school hours. Generally, teachers are willing to learn new skills to be able to help these children, however, further training is required to improve the understanding and management of this disease.

ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) provides a vital support to patients with supposed reversible respiratory and/or cardiac failure, in whom conventional support techniques have been previously unsuccessful. ⋯ Survival among children supported with ECMO in our hospital is similar to that recorded by the ELSO in 2004, although the prognosis depends on the initial pathology. There are different criteria for starting this technique depending on the underlying diseases: respiratory index of poor prognosis in patients with respiratory failure, haemodynamic instability in those with sepsis or cardiac failure after cardiovascular surgery. We have not found any serious sequel among the survivors which could be attributable to this technique.
