Epidemiological analysis of congenital glaucoma: a national scenario.
Congenital glaucoma is a disease that involves increased intraocular pressure and can result in irreversible visual deterioration. The study of epidemiology allows the delineation of the characteristics associated with patients and specific risk factors. ⋯ Studies on the mechanisms of congenital glaucoma seek to improve knowledge about the disease. Epidemiological evaluation is essential for identifying demographic and clinical patterns of the disease.

Antibiotic stewardship and nosocomial infection prevention in critically ill patients: a quality improvement program.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of the implementation of a bundle of interventions through a "Program for Antibiotic Management and Nosocomial Infection Prevention" in the intensive care unit on antibiotic and devices use and healthcare-associated infections. ⋯ Quality improvement actions focused primarily on antimicrobial management and prevention of healthcare-associated infection are feasible and have the potential to decrease antibiotic use and healthcare-associated infection rates.

The association of CYP11A1 gene polymorphisms with the polycystic ovary syndrome patients.
The objective of this study was to investigate the allele frequencies of polymorphisms in genes CYP11A1 rs4886595 and CYP11A1 rs4887139 that are responsible for the steroidogenesis mechanism in polycystic ovary syndrome patients and control females. ⋯ Future research ought to focus on elucidating the susceptible causes of polycystic ovary syndrome with a wide range of SNPs and more sample size. The genome-wide association studies in polycystic ovary syndrome patients of different origin will be important to identify candidate genes as well as proteins that are implied in polycystic ovary syndrome risk.

The role of the Chitinase 3-Like 1 (CHI3L1) genes in the preeclampsia pathophysiology.
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Chitinase 3-Like 1 gene polymorphisms and the occurrence of preeclampsia in a selected cohort of pregnant women. ⋯ The study suggests that the rs880633 polymorphism may serve a protective role against the development of preeclampsia, whereas the rs7515776 polymorphism may be associated with an elevated risk. Further research is warranted to elucidate the clinical implications of these findings.

NAMPT gene rs2058539 variant is a risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a chronic liver disease and a growing global epidemic. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between a visfatin gene (NAMPT) variant and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, owing to the connection between this disease and insulin resistance, obesity, inflammation, and oxidative stress, and the role of visfatin in these metabolic disorders. ⋯ Our findings indicated for the first time that the NAMPT rs2058539 "CC" genotype is a marker of increased nonalcoholic fatty liver disease susceptibility; however, it needs to be supported by further investigations in other populations.
