The aim of this study was to investigate the flow resistance and flow rate in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in the surgical intensive care unit and their relation with autonomic nervous modulation. ⋯ The flow rate is decreased and the flow resistance increased in patients with ARDS. PEEP is one of the causes of increased flow resistance and decreased flow rate in patients with ARDS. Another cause of decreased flow rate and increased flow resistance in ARDS patients is the increased vagal activity and decreased sympathetic activity. The monitoring of flow rate and flow resistance during mechanical ventilation might be useful for the proper management of ARDS patients.

In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is a catastrophic complication for patients while admitted in a medical institution. The outcome of IHCA remains poor, and understanding of the prognostic factors for survival outcome after IHCA is lacking, specifically in an oriental population. ⋯ Based on data from a single hospital registry in East Asia, a shorter duration of resuscitation was demonstrated to be a predictor of immediate survival with ROSC and survival to hospital discharge.

Academic publications are important for developing a medical specialty or discipline and improvements of quality of care. As hospice palliative care medicine is a rapidly growing medical specialty in Taiwan, this study aimed to analyze the hospice palliative care-related publications from 1993 through 2013 both worldwide and in Taiwan, by using the Web of Science database. ⋯ The number of hospice palliative care-related publications increased rapidly from 1993 to 2013 in the world and in Taiwan; however, the number of publications from Taiwan is still far below those published in several other countries. Further research is needed to identify and try to reduce the barriers to hospice palliative care research and publication in Taiwan.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with decortication is a major treatment for thoracic empyema in the fibropurulent stage. Compared to open thoracotomy, VATS decortication has similar efficacy but fewer postoperative complications in the treatment of thoracic empyema. The role of VATS decortication in the elderly had rarely been investigated. ⋯ We concluded that VATS decortication in the treatment of thoracic empyema is effective in elderly patients. The major concerns of postoperative complications are respiratory failure and sepsis.

Laborers and soldiers from China and Southeast Asia recruited during the First World War by Britain and France have been suggested as the origin of the 1918 influenza pandemic in Western Europe. This study aimed to review the available data to better understand the sources and origins of the 1918 influenza pandemic, and clarify whether, in fact, there was an Asian connection to its onset. ⋯ The results indicated that influenza mortality (estimated 1/1000) in Chinese and Southeast Asian laborers and soldiers lagged other co-located military units by several weeks. This finding does not support a Southeast Asian importation of lethal influenza to Europe in 1918.
