Dry eye disease (DED), also called the keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is one of the most common diseases in the ophthalmology clinics. While DED is not a life-threatening disease, life quality may be substantially affected by the discomfort and the complications of poor vision. As such, a large number of studies have made contributions to the investigation of the DED pathogenesis and novel treatments. ⋯ The clinical manifestations of dry eye on animal models can be induced by mechanical or surgical approaches, iatrogenic immune response, topical eye drops, blockage of neural pathway, or others. Although these models have shown promising results, each has its own limitation and cannot fully reproduce the pathophysiological mechanisms that occur in patients. Nonetheless, the animal models remain the best approximation of human DED and represent the valuable tool for the DED studies.

Marfan syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disease that causes aortic root dilatation and dissection and requires surgical intervention. Apart from emergent surgery for aortic dissection or aortic aneurysmal rupture, prophylactic surgical intervention can also be administered, depending on the severity of aortic root dilatation. The direct relationship between surgical intervention and aortic regurgitation was seldom mentioned in previous studies. ⋯ Among adolescents and young adults with Marfan syndrome, echocardiographic presentation of aortic root dilatation, left ventricular dilatation, and significant aortic regurgitation was significantly associated with prophylactic surgical intervention. According to the study, significant aortic regurgitation should also be considered as an important indication for prophylactic surgery.

Although external fixator is standard for managing staged treatment of open tibial fracture, the main disadvantage of this device is too bulky to be tolerated by most patients for longtime use. The purposes of this pilot study were to compare the biomechanical properties of a novel low-profile external fixator (LP-ESF) with a traditional ESF and also to evaluate its performance in patients with Gustilo type IIIb tibial open fractures. ⋯ In this study, we found that the novel LP-ESFs had improved clinical outcomes. The long-term LP-ESF application seems to be tolerable in our patients. This novel approach permits better controls in deep infection and faster healing of fractures, and thus may provide a viable alternative treatment for Gustilo type IIIb open tibial fractures.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the main risk factors contributing to morbidity and mortality of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aimed to investigate the potential role of miR-485-5p in human LN. ⋯ Serum miR-485-5p might be a novel promising diagnostic marker for LN and has potential predictive value for ESRD risk in LN patients.
