X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS) is one of the common early-onset hereditary retinal degenerative diseases in men. The common symptoms of XLRS range from mild to severe central vision loss and radial stripes created by the fovea, the division of the inner layer of the retina in the peripheral retina and the significant decrease in b-wave amplitude (ERG). Retinoschisin, the 224-amino-acid protein product of the retinoschisis 1 (RS1) gene, contains a discoid domain as the primary structural unit, an N-terminal cleavable signal sequence, and an oligomerization-area component. ⋯ As a recessive genetic disease, XLRS was usually treated by prescribing low vision aids in most clinical cases. A gene replacement therapy based on adeno-associated virus vectors was initiated and showed a breakthrough in treating XLRS in 2014. Understanding the revolution of gene therapy for treating XLRS may accelerate its development and make this gene therapy the template for developing therapeutics against other inherited retinal diseases.

With the growth of the aging population, the need for colonoscopies in nonagenarians is rising. However, few data on colonoscopies in extremely elderly individuals are available. To better acknowledge the role of colonoscopies in this specific group of patients, we conducted this study to evaluate the safety and clinical impact of colonoscopy in nonagenarian patients. ⋯ Colonoscopy in patients older than 90 years is generally safe. Colonoscopy findings that led to surgery in nonagenarians diagnosed with colorectal cancer were associated with survival benefits.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) can worsen the prognosis or survival in prostate cancer (PC) patients. We investigated whether glycemic control impacts mortality in PC patients with existing diabetes. ⋯ Our findings indicate that PC patients with DM who had a mean HbA1c level ≥ 9% had higher risks of all-cause and non-PC mortality compared with non-DM subjects. Further large and long-term studies are needed to verify the effect of glycemic control in PC patients with DM.

Multigene assays, such as MammaPrint and BluePrint, provide additional information other than conventional immunohistochemistry (IHC) to help making decision of treatment. This study aims to compare the clinical correlation between molecular subtyping (MS) versus surrogate pathological subtyping (PS). ⋯ The MS results restratify the subtypes of hormone receptor positive breast cancer and dominate decision-making of adjuvant therapy. The role of surrogate biomarkers as an alternative tool needs further elucidation. The treatment outcome in different subtypes categorized by MS or PS will be the interesting focus of research.

Studies of the 100 most-cited articles are reported for many subjects. However, none has analyzed the article characteristics associated with high citation frequency. This study aims to (1) graphically depict characteristics of the 100 top-cited articles addressing adult spinal deformity (ASD), (2) diagram the association between articles according to subject and major topic medical subject headings (MeSHs), and (3) investigate whether major topic MeSH correlates with article citation frequency. ⋯ Multiple characteristics of the 100 top-cited ASD articles are presented in diagrams to guide evidence-based clinical decision-making in ASD.
