To describe (1) the international scope of counterfeit drugs, (2) international and U.S. anticounterfeiting initiatives, and (3) the enhanced roles and challenges facing pharmaceutical organizations and individual pharmacists to thwart counterfeit drugs. ⋯ Although consistent detection of counterfeit drugs is difficult, pharmacists can take several reasonable measures to lessen the chances they are dispensing counterfeit drugs. However, the increased role of pharmacists is accompanied by several important challenges involving increased expense and altered business practices.

Chemotherapy-induced anemia at an urban academic medical center: iron studies and supplementation.
To determine the number of patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia receiving an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) in whom iron studies were completed and iron supplementation was provided and to document the response rate of ESA therapy without parenteral iron at our medical center. ⋯ The overall response rate and time to Hb response were consistent with previous reports. Iron indices were not commonly measured before ESA therapy was started, and only a few patients were provided oral iron supplementation at our medical center.

Pharmacist-provided medication therapy management (part 2): Payer perspectives in 2007.
To collect and describe payer perspectives regarding (1) implementation strategies used for providing medication therapy management (MTM) services to patients/clients; (2) specific measures, if any, used to quantify the costs and benefits of MTM; (3) how the value of MTM services was tracked during 2007; and (4) barriers to offering MTM services to patients/clients. ⋯ During 2008, plans may have greater opportunity to measure outcomes in a longitudinal fashion and make adjustments to MTM provision strategies. Some evidence for this was suggested in respondent comments to our survey, but future validation is needed before reaching a firm conclusion.

ReviewSafety issues associated with commercially available energy drinks.
To describe benefits and adverse effects associated with the consumption of energy drinks. ⋯ The amounts of guarana, taurine, and ginseng found in popular energy drinks are far below the amounts expected to deliver either therapeutic benefits or adverse events. However, caffeine and sugar are present in amounts known to cause a variety of adverse health effects.

Medication therapy management in pharmacy practice: core elements of an MTM service model (version 2.0).
To further develop the service model for medication therapy management (MTM) delivery by pharmacists in settings where patients or their caregivers can be actively involved in managing their medications. ⋯ The developing service model presented in this article for use by pharmacists involved in providing MTM services in diverse patient care settings consists of five core elements. The service model provides a consistent and recognizable framework for MTM service delivery by pharmacists that enhances efficient delivery of the service and improves patient outcomes.
