Drug interaction between oral contraceptives and St. John's Wort: appropriateness of advice received from community pharmacists and health food store clerks.
To estimate the extent to which community pharmacists and health food store clerks provide appropriate advice regarding a drug interaction between oral contraceptives and St. John's wort (SJW). ⋯ Lack of awareness of the potentially serious drug interaction between SJW and oral contraceptives by those who sell these products places the public at risk. Training and education, more comprehensive product labeling, and policies to refer consumers to drug information centers are needed.

Pharmacists' smoking cessation practices: relationship to their knowledge and skills, attitudes, and perceptions of roles.
To assess factors associated with pharmacists' practices regarding patients' smoking and smoking cessation. ⋯ Initiatives to increase tobacco-related knowledge and skills and enhance positive attitudes and role perceptions with respect to smoking and smoking cessation may promote interventions by community pharmacists with patients who smoke.

Value of pharmaceuticals: ensuring the future of research and development.
To analyze the current situation under which the pharmaceutical industry is criticized for the production of drugs with potential adverse effects, the high prices of medicines, and aggressive marketing practices, and to provide a proposal to rectify the situation. ⋯ Given appropriate legislative or other facilitatory actions, a royalty-based system for the marketing of generic products after the expiration of initial patents has the potential to promote innovation, provide for more thorough clinical studies, reduce prices, and share know-how. In addition, some of the issues related to the so-called aggressive pharmaceutical marketing practices would be resolved.

Community pharmacists' work environments: evidence from the 2004 National Pharmacist Workforce Study.
To describe characteristics of community pharmacists' current practice environments and pharmacists perceptions' about aspects of their work environments. ⋯ Pharmacists' work environments tend to be oriented toward traditional dispensing roles and activities. Staff, equipment, and information technology resources are available to facilitate both dispensing and patient care activities, and these resources have increased productivity, quality of care, and pharmacists' satisfaction.

The Asheville Project: long-term clinical, humanistic, and economic outcomes of a community-based medication therapy management program for asthma.
To assess clinical, humanistic, and economic outcomes of a community-based medication therapy management (MTM) program for 207 adult patients with asthma over 5 years. ⋯ Patients with asthma who received education and long-term medication therapy management services achieved and maintained significant improvements and had significantly decreased overall asthma-related costs despite increased medication costs that resulted from increased use.
