Regulating gabapentin as a drug of abuse: A survey study of Kentucky community pharmacists.
As the number of gabapentin prescriptions has increased, so have reports of its misuse and diversion. This trend has led some states to closer monitoring of gabapentin dispensing through prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs). The objective of this study was to collect and analyze Kentucky community pharmacists' perceptions of gabapentin misuse and diversion, and their support or opposition to regulatory efforts to reclassify the drug as a controlled substance (CS). ⋯ Kentucky community pharmacists express considerable concern over the possible misuse and diversion of gabapentin and widely support regulatory changes reclassifying gabapentin as a CS.

The purpose of this evaluation was to determine whether the percentage of women as first authors in pharmacy journals has continued to increase over the past decade. ⋯ Female first authorship in pharmacy practice journals appears to have increased in the past decade but may potentially be reaching a plateau. The proportion of female first authorship is close to reaching that of women in the U.S. pharmacy workforce when compared over the same time period.

Implementation and barriers to uptake of interactive voice response technology aimed to improve blood pressure control at a large academic medical center.
Blood pressure control among patients with hypertension is a widely recognized quality metric, but many large health systems fail to reach targets set by the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set. We developed an interactive voice response (IVR) system called the "Mobile You Blood Pressure Program" at a large academic medical center and linked it to the health system's electronic health record (EHR). The goal of the program was to capture home blood pressure readings in the EHR and to alert ambulatory care clinical pharmacists automatically of readings below or above clinical thresholds through direct messaging in the EHR. The goal of this report is to describe implementation of IVR, initial patient participation rates, and pharmacist-identified barriers to patient enrollment. ⋯ The IVR Mobile You Blood Pressure Program represents a new application of digital technology within our health system. Pharmacist-identified barriers to patient participation included access to a validated home blood pressure monitor.
