Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial[Shared decision making (SDM) with chronic pain patients. The patient as a partner in the medical decision making process].
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is an exemplary condition of chronic widespread pain that is difficult to control and often leads to frustration and resignation on the part of both the patient and the doctor. Shared decision making (SDM) could be a means to facilitate doctor-patient interaction and might therefore influence therapeutic decisions taken. We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the effects of SDM with FMS patients. ⋯ SDM is one means to increase FMS patients' readiness for treatment. Especially the element of providing sufficient medical information seems to account for this effect. The readiness to enroll in physical activities, to take analgesics, and to participate in psychotherapeutic elements was most likely to be raised through SDM.

The Dutch National Atlas of Public Health.
The Dutch National Atlas of Public Health (http://www.zorgatlas.nl) maps the regional distribution of demand and usage of health care, public health status and influencing factors. The Atlas provides answers to locational questions, e. g. 'Where are the highest mortality rates?', 'Where are the longest waiting lists?' and 'Where are hospitals located?' Maps play a pivotal role in the Atlas. Texts, graphics and diagrams support the interpretation of the maps. ⋯ In practice, also the general public appears to access and use the Atlas. The Atlas is part of the Dutch Public Health Status and Forecasts (PHSF). The PHSF is made by the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment mandated by the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

[Task and function of the European Food Safety Authority].
In 2002, the European Commission and the European Parliament established the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The provisional seat of the new Authority is Brussels and the final seat of the authority will be Parma, Italy. EFSA's main task is to carry out risk assessment and to provide independent scientific advice on all matters linked to food and feed safety. ⋯ Therefore, EFSA's risk assessments provide risk managers with a sound scientific basis for regulatory measures in order to ensure a high level of consumer protection. EFSA is confessed to openness and transparence. The authority keeps good links to all European institutions, particularly to the European Commission and the European Parliament, to national authorities, which have similar tasks to EFSA, and to stakeholders such as consumer and food industry organisations.

Multicenter Study[Quality registries in cardiology].
Prospective registries performed in consecutive patients with frequent cardiac diseases and procedures are able to provide important information about therapies, complications, clinical outcome, and temporal trends in cardiology. Since 1992 all consecutive percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) performed in over 80 hospitals of the ALKK (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Leitende Kardiologische Krankenhausärzte) have been centrally collected in a registry. This registry contains over 20% of all PCI procedures performed in Germany during the last 10 years. ⋯ A similar concept formed the basis for five consecutive registries in patients admitted with acute myocardial infarction. In these registries the participating investigators were asked to provide reasons for their treatment decisions, e. g., withholding guideline- adherent therapies. With this feature an increase in the use of guideline-adherent therapies could be observed, which was associated with an improvement in clinical outcome.
