Randomized Controlled Trial
[Glove perforation in surgery and protective effect of double gloves].
To investigate the incidence of glove perforation in programmed surgery and compare perforation rates between single-gloves and double-gloves. To evaluate the extent to which glove perforations remain undetected during surgery. ⋯ We conclude that double gloving is effective in surgery, inasmuch as the barrier protection was maintained by the inner glove in four out of five cases when the outer glove was inadvertently perforated. Surgical teams must balance the improved safety of double gloving with the possible discomfort and reduced sensitivity.

To assess the impact on the incidence of PPIVC by implementing a catheter management protocol and to determine risk factors for PPIVC development in hospitalized patients. ⋯ A catheter management protocol decreases the incidence of PPIVC in hospitalized patients. The risk of PPIVC increases for peripherally inserted central venous catheters when the patients have a history of phlebitis and for peripheral venous catheters when amiodarone or cefotaxime are infused. Catheterization of peripheral veins performed during morning shifts is associated with a lower incidence of PPIVC when compared with night shift catheterizations.

To determine the prevalence of dysmenorrhoea in the Torrijos area of Toledo, the social-demographic and individual characteristics that could be associated with it, and the self-care measures and self-medication used. ⋯ Dysmenorrhea is a potentially incapacitating problem. It is very common, and requires more attention in Primary Health Care.

Multicenter Study
[Knowledge and attitudes on pain management by nurses in surgery and oncology in level III hospitals].
Identify the knowledge and attitudes on pain by nurses in general surgery and oncology units in Level III hospitals, and to find out if there are any differences between groups. ⋯ The level of knowledge that the nurses studied had on pain was not very high. Specific training is required and its impact evaluated.

To study nurses' perceptions of the quality of communication with the families of patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). ⋯ We found a widespread absence of nurse activities for communicating with the families of admitted patients. Older staff spoke more frequently about patient's lives and those working for longer in the unit were less likely to inform relatives about the care plan.
