Functional and radiographic outcomes of nonoperative treatment of displaced adolescent clavicle fractures.
Studies of adult patients suggest that nonoperative treatment of clavicle fractures may result in functional disability, but this has not been demonstrated in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to determine the functional outcomes after nonoperative treatment of displaced, shortened, midshaft clavicle fractures in adolescents. ⋯ Regardless of patient age, sports participation, and final clavicle shortening, no differences in pain, strength, shoulder range of motion, or subjective outcome scores were found between the injured and uninjured limbs of adolescents treated nonoperatively for a displaced, shortened, midshaft clavicle fracture.

ReviewPublished evidence demonstrating the causation of glenohumeral chondrolysis by postoperative infusion of local anesthetic via a pain pump.
Glenohumeral chondrolysis is the irreversible destruction of previously normal articular cartilage, occurring most commonly after shoulder surgery in young individuals. The reported incidence of this complication has risen rapidly since the early 2000s. As chondrolysis cannot be reversed, its occurrence can only be prevented by establishing and avoiding its causes. ⋯ The published evidence indicates that the preponderance of cases of glenohumeral chondrolysis can be prevented by the avoidance of the intra-articular infusion of local anesthetic via a pain pump.

Evaluation of the content and accessibility of web sites for accredited orthopaedic sports medicine fellowships.
The Internet is a common source of information for orthopaedic residents applying for sports medicine fellowships, with the web sites of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the San Francisco Match serving as central databases. We sought to evaluate the web sites for accredited orthopaedic sports medicine fellowships with regard to content and accessibility. ⋯ Improvement in the accessibility and quality of information on orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship web sites would facilitate the ability of applicants to obtain useful information.

The effect of platelet-rich plasma on posterolateral lumbar fusion in a rat model.
Our purpose was to examine platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for its effect on bone formation and to follow the immunohistochemical changes in calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in dorsal root ganglion neurons innervating the discs as a possible index of nociceptive nerve transmission in a rat model. ⋯ The ability of PRP in this model suggests that it may be able to shorten the period of union and lead to an early return to social activities after treatment.

Reducing hospital readmissions has become a priority in the development of policies aimed at patient safety and cost reduction. Evaluating the incidence of rehospitalization of orthopaedic surgical patients could help to identify targets for more efficient perioperative care. We addressed two questions: What is the incidence of thirty-day readmission for orthopaedic patients at an academic hospital? Can any risk factors for readmission be identified among rehospitalized patients? ⋯ Prognostic Level II. See Instructions for Authors for a complete description of levels of evidence.
