ReviewImportance of olfactory and vomeronasal systems for male sexual function.
Chemosensory cues stimulate male sexual arousal and behavior. The main olfactory system has an important role in attracting males to estrous females, and the vomeronasal receptors are important for activating accessory olfactory pathways that engage mating behavior in a sexually dimorphic manner. The gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons like the vomeronasal organ (VNO) neurons take their origin in the olfactory placode and migrate to the basal forebrain along pathfinder axons that take their origin in the developing VNO. ⋯ Although VNO slices and VNO receptor neurons in culture respond to volatile odors, in vivo electrophysiological recordings at the first relay in the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) are silent until the male makes active nuzzling investigations of the female. The VNO neurons may therefore respond to volatiles that are transported into the organ on carrier peptides that themselves may play a part in receptor activation. In the context of modern molecular phylogenetic studies, it is becoming less likely that pheromones acting via the VNO have any part to play in human sexual behavior, but the possibility exists for conserved VNO genes influencing human reproduction via fertilization.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialThermal sensation and comfort in women exposed repeatedly to whole-body cryotherapy and winter swimming in ice-cold water.
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC; -110 degrees C) and winter swimming (WS) in ice-cold water are severe ambient cold exposures, which are voluntarily practiced by humans in minimal clothing. The purpose was to examine thermal sensation and thermal comfort associated with WBC and WS. Twenty women similar in body mass index, age, physical activity, and use of hormonal contraception were pairwise randomized either to the WBC group or the WS group. ⋯ In the WBC group, cold sensation was less intense already after the second exposure. In conclusion, repeated exposures to WBC and WS in healthy women were mostly well tolerated and comfortable. The results indicate that during repeated severe whole-body cold stress of short duration, thermal sensation and comfort become habituated during the first exposures.

Comparative StudyChanges in anxiety-related behaviors and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity in mice lacking the 5-HT-3A receptor.
The serotonin-3 (5-HT-3A) receptor has been localized in limbic and brainstem structures that regulate anxiety-related behavior and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity, but its role in regulating anxiety-related behaviors is equivocal, and evidence for its role in regulating HPA activity is limited. Therefore, we used 5-HT-3A receptor knockout (KO) mice to further study these issues. Behavior in the elevated plus maze, open field, light-dark box and after Pavlovian fear conditioning was examined in addition to HPA activity under basal and acute stress conditions. ⋯ In addition, lower vasopressin mRNA in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) and higher corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) mRNA in the central amygdala were observed in KO compared to WT mice. Therefore, deletion of the 5-HT-3A receptor revealed an important role for this receptor in regulating HPA responses to acute stress and a potential interaction between the 5-HT-3A receptor and CRH in the amygdala. Together, these data suggest that the 5-HT-3A receptor does not have a unitary role in the regulation of anxiety- and fear-related behaviors but has a potentially substantial role in the regulation of HPA activity.

Comparative StudyNonevoked facial pain in rats following infraorbital nerve injury: a parametric analysis.
Unilateral chronic constriction injury to the infraorbital nerve (IoN-CCI) induces an increase in face-grooming behavior that is not part of normal body grooming (i.e., "isolated face grooming"). Despite the validity of isolated face grooming as a measure of spontaneous neuropathic pain, variation between rats in postoperative face grooming has limited its usefulness. We examined whether performing bilateral rather than unilateral IoN surgery could induce a more stable face-grooming behavior. ⋯ The effects of cage size were mostly related to differences in episode duration; that is, rats performed longer face-grooming episodes in the small compared to the large observation cage. The present data confirm previous reports that isolated face grooming is a more sensitive measure than the total amount of face grooming. Bilateral IoN surgery does not seem to offer a more stable outcome measure; increases in isolated face grooming were, however, more clearly observed in the small cage.

Effects of neonatal handling on the behavior and prolactin stress response in male and female rats at various ages and estrous cycle phases of females.
Neonatal handling induces behavioral and hormonal changes, characterized by reduced fear in novel environments, and lesser elevation and faster return to basal levels of plasma corticosterone, prolactin and adrenaline, in response to stressors in adulthood. The present study aimed to analyze the effects of neonatal handling from Days 1 to 10 postnatal on prolactin response to ether stress in male and female rats at three life periods: neonatal, peripubertal and adulthood. Moreover, adult females were tested in two different phases of the estrous cycle, i.e., diestrus and estrus. ⋯ In the elevated plus maze, handled females in diestrus, but not in estrus, showed higher locomotor activity compared with nonhandled ones. Peripubertal male and female rats handled during the neonatal period showed no difference in behavior in the elevated plus maze compared with nonhandled animals. Early-life stimulation can induce long-lasting behavioral and stress-related hormonal changes, but they are not stable throughout life and phases of the estrous cycle.
