Optimal pain management after total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains controversial. We perform a meta-analysis from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the efficacy and safety of fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) in THA. ⋯ Fascia iliaca compartment block was effective for pain relief during the early post-operative period after total hip arthroplasty. Meanwhile, it reduced the cumulative morphine consumption and the risk of opioid-related adverse effects.

Fractures of the distal femur remain challenging to treat, and numerous fixation methods are designed to promote stability and fracture healing. Locking plate constructs have recently become the mainstream fixation method, but debate exists on whether to use locking plates alone or to augment them with interfragmentary screws. This article compares outcomes of distal femur fractures treated with a single locking plate alone versus those treated with a locking plate and interfragmentary screws. ⋯ In this study, the combination of a locking plate and interfragmentary screws achieved suitable stability and a faster time to full weight bearing than using a locking plate alone. Surgeons should consider combining a locking plate with interfragmentary screws as an effective method for fixation of distal femur fractures, particularly in cases when plate fixation alone fails to provide adequate fracture stability.

The role of thymus preservation in parathyroid gland function and surgical completeness after bilateral central lymph node dissection for papillary thyroid cancer: A randomized controlled study.
The clinical value of thymus preservation during thyroid carcinoma surgery remains unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the role of bilateral thymus preservation in parathyroid glands (PGs) function and surgical completeness in total thyroidectomy (TT) with bilateral central lymph node dissection (CLND). ⋯ Thymus preservation had benefits on protecting PGs and promoting rapid clinical resolution of hypoparathyroidism. It had no effects on oncologic completeness of TT with bilateral CLND.

The advantages of adding rib fixations during VATS for retained hemothorax in serious blunt chest trauma - A prospective cohort study.
Serious blunt chest trauma usually induces hemothorax, pneumothorax, and rib fracture. Early video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to evacuate retained hemothorax is one commonly used treatment. In this study, a new strategy was implemented to combine VATS with fractured rib fixation simultaneously. ⋯ Adding rib fixation during VATS in the management of retained hemothorax can contribute to shorten whole treatment courses. Rib fixation can also reduce pain, thus reducing dependence on analgesics.
