Communication among trauma team members in the trauma bay is vulnerable to errors, which may impact patient outcomes. We used the previously validated trauma-non-technical skills (T-NOTECHS) tool to identify communication gaps during patient management in the trauma bay and to inform development strategies to improve team performance. ⋯ A lower communication score was identified using T-NOTECHS, attributed to incomplete closed loop communications and parallel conversations. Through video review of trauma team activations, opportunities for improvement in communication can be identified by the T-NOTECHS tool, as well as specifically identifying callouts and closed loop communication. This process may be useful for trauma programs as part of a quality improvement program on communication skills and team performance.

Treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) evolved between pandemic waves. Our objective was to compare treatments, acute care utilization, and outcomes of COVID-19 patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) across pandemic waves. ⋯ In patients presenting to cute care facilities, we observed rapid uptake of evidence-based therapies and less use of experimental therapies in the second wave. We observed increased rates of ED discharges and lower hospital and critical care resource use over time. Substantial reductions in mechanical ventilation were not associated with increasing mortality. Advances in treatment strategies created health system efficiencies without compromising patient outcomes.

Hand fractures account for a significant proportion of all fractures seen in pediatric emergency departments (ED). It is essential for initial interventions to be successful to avoid unnecessary repeat interventions/complications. We sought to assess whether quality improvement interventions could decrease the rate of repeat reductions by plastic surgeons in our tertiary centre. ⋯ This study highlights the importance of multifaceted interventions to achieve improved patient care, specifically the potential impact of specialized physicians, informal feedback and education, formal teaching workshops, and electronic medical records.
