Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease. Its onset is typically gradual, usually followed by periods of spontaneous remission and subsequent relapses. Grape seed polyphenols (GSP), a natural product extracted from grape seeds, have strong anti-inflammatory functions. ⋯ Our study suggests that GSP has protective effects against DSS-induced UC, which may through suppression of inflammation and apoptosis.

Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is an active component extracted from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine. AS-IV is a neuroprotective component in cerebral ischemic models. However, roles of AS-IV in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury and the underlying mechanisms are rarely investigated. ⋯ AS-IV protected against cerebral I/R injury and reversed by AG490. Therefore, in vitro and in vivo analyses suggested that AS-IV may protect against cerebral I/R injury partly mediated by JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway and antioxidative effects. AS-IV may serve as a novel therapeutic regimen for cerebral I/R injury.

The potential protective effects of resveratrol (RES) on the modulation of hepatic biomarkers of apoptosis and survival, p53-Bax axis, and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) in an animal model of paracetamol-induced acute liver injury have not been investigated before. ⋯ We demonstrate a substantial protection by RES pretreatment against paracetamol-induced modulation of p53-Bax axis, Bcl-2, and other acute liver injury biomarkers in rats.

The present study aimed to elucidate the effects of tramadol on the testicular functions of adult male rats due to the chronic usage of tramadol and the effect of its withdrawal. ⋯ It could be concluded that the administration of tramadol causes abnormalities on testicular tissues associated with oxidative stress, which confirmed the risk of increased oxidative stress on testicular tissues due to tramadol abuse.

Anthroquinones are considered remarkable anticancer agents. Chrysophanol is an important anthroquinone and it has shown to have the potential to inhibit the growth of the range of cancers. However, there are no studies regarding the anticancer effects of chrysophanol against the malignant meningioma of optic nerve. In this review, the potential of chrysophanol in the treatment of malignant -meningioma of optic nerve was explored by evaluating its anticancer activity against the malignant meningioma CH157-MN cells. ⋯ The findings of the present study suggest that chrysophanol may prove beneficial in the treatment of malignant meningioma of optic nerve. Key Message: The study revealed the anticancer potential of chrysophanol against the malignant optic nerve meningioma.
