Pharmacists' performance of clinical interventions during adherence support medication reviews.
In New Zealand, pharmacists are funded to provide adherence support to their patients via a service called "Medicines Use Review" (MUR). The service is based on the assumption that the medication regimen is clinically appropriate and therefore does not include a clinical review. However, whether or not pharmacists make clinical recommendations to patients during MUR is unclear. ⋯ In this study, pharmacists perhaps based on ethical, legal and moral obligations provided clinical interventions that exceeded those expected and funded in a MUR. Since MUR detected a low number of clinical DRPs when compared to clinical medication review services conducted previously, a funding system that only supports MUR might not provide the important clinical support required by patients. Patients who receive only MUR may potentially be missing out on optimal care.

Examination of risk evaluation and mitigation strategies and drug safety in the US.
The Food and Drug Administration Amendment Act of 2007 (FDAAA 2007) enabled the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require risk evaluation and mitigation strategies (REMS) for a drug or biologic to ensure that its benefits outweigh the risks. ⋯ The FDA approved REMS for one in three biologics and one in thirteen chemical entities available in the market. A pharmaceutical product can be in the market for an average of 14 years before the FDA identifies and evaluates the risk problems that warrant the approval of a REMS.

Development and validation of a measure and a model of general practitioner attitudes toward collaboration with pharmacists.
Collaboration between general practitioners (GPs) and community pharmacists has been shown to be effective in improving patient outcomes. However, little is known about GP attitudes toward collaborating with their pharmacist counterparts and variables that influence this interprofessional collaboration. ⋯ The study provides evidence for the validity of the ATCI-GP for measuring GP-pharmacist collaboration from the GPs perspective and supports a model for collaboration in which collaborative behavior is influenced by a number of variables.

The role of pharmaceutical marketing and other factors in prescribing decisions: the Yemeni experience.
Prescribing decisions are a complex phenomenon and influenced by many pharmacological and non-pharmacological factors. Little is known about the actual prescribing behaviors of physicians or the factors behind their prescribing decisions. ⋯ Prescribing is a complex process and physicians integrate different factors. Although physicians make a considerable on patient contexts and treatment outcomes, they still rely on their personal experiences when making prescribing in addition to firms' source of information and firms' marketing activities.

Prevalence and correlates of self-reported medication non-adherence among older adults with coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and/or hypertension.
Information about the prevalence and correlates of self-reported medication nonadherence using multiple measures in older adults with chronic cardiovascular conditions is needed. ⋯ Self-reported medication nonadherence was common in older adults with chronic cardiovascular conditions and only one factor - race - was associated with both types. The research implication of this finding is that it highlights the need to measure both types of self-reported nonadherence in older adults. Moreover, the administration of these quick measures in the clinical setting should help identify specific actions such as patient education or greater use of generic medications or pill boxes that may address barriers to medication nonadherence.
