Evaluation of the obesity surgery mortality risk score for the prediction of postoperative complications after primary and revisional laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
The Obesity Surgery Mortality Risk Score (OS-MRS) is a validated instrument for mortality risk prediction in patients undergoing laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) procedures classifying patients into low risk (class A), intermediate risk (class B), and high risk (class C). ⋯ The OS-MRS was not an accurate predictor for postoperative complications in patients who underwent primary or revisional LRYGB. As in other studies, revisional surgery is an independent risk factor for the development of severe complications.

Factors associated with length of stay in intensive care after bariatric surgery.
Although uncommon, admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) after bariatric surgery may be necessary. This study evaluates characteristics of bariatric surgery patients that are admitted to the ICU, and identifies possible risk factors for increased ICU length of stay (LOS). ⋯ ICU admission after bariatric surgery is uncommon but is associated with a significantly increased mortality. Anastomotic leak, conversions, time from operation to ICU admission, and reoperation have the greatest impact in determining the LOS in the ICU after bariatric surgery.

Effects of omentectomy in addition to sleeve gastrectomy on the metabolic and inflammatory profiles of obese rats.
Visceral obesity has been considered a risk factor for metabolic and cardiovascular complications. In an attempt to reduce the visceral adipose tissue, omentectomy has been proposed to be performed along with bariatric surgery. ⋯ In this study, we did not observe additional beneficial effects due to omentectomy associated with SG in the metabolic profile and tissue expression of inflammatory markers.

Comparative Study Observational StudyComparative effectiveness of 3 bariatric surgery procedures: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and sleeve gastrectomy.
Bariatric surgery is associated with improved co-morbidities, quality of life, and survival in severely obese patients. Common bariatric surgery procedures include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB), and sleeve gastrectomy (SG). Currently, literature studying comparative effectiveness on different bariatric surgery procedures in veterans is limited. ⋯ For the short term, RYGB appears to achieve better weight reduction and management of obesity-associated co-morbid conditions compared with the SG and LAGB procedures in veteran patients. SG could be the next alternative over LAGB for the bariatric surgery procedure in patients who are not candidates for RYGB.
