Effects of sevoflurane preconditioning and postconditioning on rat myocardial stunning in ischemic reperfusion injury.
Ischemic preconditioning and postconditioning distinctly attenuate ventricular arrhythmia after ischemia without affecting the severity of myocardial stunning. Therefore, we report the effects of sevoflurane preconditioning and postconditioning on stunned myocardium in isolated rat hearts. Isolated rat hearts were underwent 20 min of global ischemia and 40 min of reperfusion. ⋯ Sevoflurane postconditioning reduces reperfusion arrhythmias without affecting the severity of myocardial stunning. In contrast, sevoflurane preconditioning has no beneficial effects on reperfusion arrhythmias, but it is in favor of improving ventricular function and recovering myocardial stunning. Sevoflurane preconditioning and postconditioning may be useful for correcting the stunned myocardium.

Gasless laparoscopy for benign gynecological diseases using an abdominal wall-lifting system.
The use of gasless laparoscopy with an abdominal wall-lifting device for benign gynecological diseases was compared to conventional laparoscopy with CO(2) pneumoperitoneum. ⋯ Our preliminary results demonstrated that the laparoscopic procedure using the gasless technique was a safe, effective method to treat benign gynecological diseases. Moreover, it was easy to master. As a minimally invasive treatment, gasless laparoscopic surgery provides a good choice to patients in the undeveloped regions in China without increasing the patients' and the government's burden significantly.

Comparative StudyCardioprotective effects of anesthetic preconditioning in rats with ischemia-reperfusion injury: propofol versus isoflurane.
We compare the cardioprotective effects of anesthetic preconditioning by propofol and/or isoflurane in rats with ischemia-reperfusion injury. ⋯ A combination of isoflurane and propofol produced no additional cardioprotection.

Case ReportsSubglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma mistaken for asthma.
Adenoid cystic carcinoma rarely occurs within the subglottic larynx. In this study, a case of subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma was reported. A 54 year-old Chinese woman developed a sudden onset of chest distress and cough worsening after physical exertion, and was diagnosed with, and treated as, bronchial asthma. ⋯ The patient was diagnosed with a subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma and treated with complete surgical excision and adjuvant radiation therapy. Follow-up endoscopy and laryngeal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at six months showed no recurrence of the tumor. The diagnosis of subglottic adenoid cystic carcinoma should be considered in patients who are characterized by dyspnea, cough, and stridor, but do not respond to regular anti-asthmatic therapy.

Influence of systemic immune and cytokine responses during the acute phase of zoster on the development of postherpetic neuralgia.
Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a severe sequela of herpes zoster (HZ). Until now, only age and pain severity were considered predisposing factors for the development of PHN. We evaluated 49 patients with acute phase HZ, 10 of whom developed PHN (Group A) and 39 of whom did not develop PHN (Group B). ⋯ Interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, IL-8, and IL-10 were significantly elevated in Groups A and B relative to Group C. IL-6 was significantly higher in Group A than in Group B, and was significantly positively correlated with pain severity scored on a visual analog scale. Therefore, we suggest that the inflammatory response, especially that of IL-6, in the acute phase of HZ may be associated with hyperalgesia and the development of PHN.
