Aim Lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) is a leading subtype of lung cancer, histologically defined with five different architectural growth patterns: lepidic, acinar, papillary, solid and micropapillary. The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation and a relationship between the specific histological patterns of lung ADC in the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods The study included tumour tissue from 102 patients with completely resected lung ADC from 2015 to 2020. ⋯ A higher percentage of solid growth pattern presented in ADC may be an indicator of EGFR negativity (p=0.039), while a higher percentage of micropapillary growth pattern more common in the presence of EGFR mutation (p=0.047). Conclusion The prevalence of EGFR mutation is in accordance with the expected prevalence considering our studied population, Caucasians from South Europe. Better understanding of the relationship between histological patterns and molecular characteristics of lung ADC will enable earlier diagnosis and optimal treatment for patients.

Aim To analyse prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in kidney transplant recipients at the University Clinical Centre Tuzla in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H), and determine effects of a modern drug therapy in achieving target metabolic control in kidney transplant patients. Methods A single-centre prospective study that included 142 kidney transplant patients over one year follow-up period was conducted. Patient data were collected during post-transplant periodical controls every 3 months including data from medical records, clinical examinations and laboratory analyses. ⋯ After a one-year period during which patients were receiving therapy for MS, a decrease in the number of patients with hyperlipoproteinemia, decrease in average body mass index (BMI), glycemia and haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) were observed. Hypertension did not improve during this period, which can be explained by transplant risk factors in the form of immunosuppressive drugs and chronic graft dysfunction. Conclusion A significant reduction in components of the metabolic syndrome after only one year of treatment was recorded, which should be the standard care of kidney transplant patients.

Aim To investigate whether the use of ion resonance and bromelain-vitamin C or bromelain-vitamin C is the best to prevent ankle complications in post operative bimalleolar surgery. Methods A total of 61 patients treated with bimalleolar surgery were enrolled. The patients were divided into three groups: the first group (n=22) treated only with the surgery, the second group (n=18) treated by ion resonance and bromelain-vitamin C, and the third group (n=21) was treated with bromelain-vitamin C. ⋯ The worst radiographic and stiffness results in the first group were found (p=0.006). The second group showed better bone healing (p=0.049), better performance in functional recovery measured by AFAS (p=0.039). Conclusion Ion resonance and bromelain-vitamin C group showed better outcomes to improve the functional outcome; it allows reduction of complications, consequently, an early return to quality life, and a corresponding improvement of the quality of life.

Aim To evaluate changes of retinal microcirculation in mild cases of recovered COVID-19 patients at least three months after the infection by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) non-invasive method. Methods In this prospective cross-sectional study, 50 right eyes of 50 recovered COVID-19 patients were compared with 50 right eyes of age and gender-matched healthy controls. After the complete ophthalmological examination, all participants underwent OCTA measurements (RTVue XR Avanti, Optovue, Fremont, CA, USA). ⋯ Significantly reduced superficial (p=0.046) and deep (p=0.044) macular vessel density (VD) in foveal region in the eyes of the recovered COVID-19 patients was found compared with healthy controls. Significantly enlarged foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area and perimeter in the eyes of the recovered COVID-19 patients (p<0.001) were found too. Conclusion Recovered COVID-19 patients have impaired retinal microcirculation, which can be a cause of the development of retinal vascular diseases.

Aim This study provides a comprehensive review of the current literature on the use of ChatGPT, a generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool, in neurosurgery. The study examines potential benefits and limitations of ChatGPT in neurosurgical practice and education. Methods The study involved a systematic review of the current literature on the use of AI in neurosurgery, with a focus on ChatGPT. ⋯ The study also identifies potential benefits of ChatGPT, such as providing personalized treatment plans, supporting surgical planning and navigation, and enhancing large data processing efficiency and accuracy. Conclusion The integration of AI technologies into neurosurgery should be approached with caution and careful consideration of ethical and validation issues. Continued research and development of AI tools in neurosurgery can help us further understand their potential benefits and limitations.
