Pharmacokinetics of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, following intravenous administration in horses.
Current therapy protocols to treat persistent post mating endometritis and retained fetal membranes in mares typically include the administration of ecbolic drugs. Evaluation of the pharmacokinetics and tolerability of carbetocin, a long-acting oxytocin analogue, after i.v. administration is required. ⋯ Carbetocin is an attractive alternative to oxytocin therapy in broodmare management.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of a MAPK p38 inhibitor on lung function and airway inflammation in equine recurrent airway obstruction.
It has been suggested that many of the beneficial effects of corticosteroids are mediated through mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) p38 inhibition. ⋯ Inhibitors of p38 MAPK with a better toxicity profile may be effective in the prevention or treatment of RAO.

Randomized Controlled TrialAttenuation of ischaemic injury in the equine jejunum by administration of systemic lidocaine.
Absorption of endotoxin across ischaemic-injured mucosa is a major cause of mortality after colic surgery. Recent studies have shown that flunixin meglumine retards mucosal repair. Systemic lidocaine has been used to treat post operative ileus, but it also has novel anti-inflammatory effects that could improve mucosal recovery after ischaemic injury. ⋯ Treatment with systemic lidocaine ameliorated the inhibitory effects of flunixin meglumine on recovery of the mucosal barrier from ischaemic injury, when the 2 treatments were combined. The mechanism of lidocaine in improving mucosal repair has not yet been elucidated.

Ultrasound-guided periarticular injections of the sacroiliac region in horses: a cadaveric study.
The traditional techniques for injection of the sacroiliac (SI) region are based on external landmarks. Because of the depth of the SI joint and pathological modifications, SI injections are sometimes challenging in horses. ⋯ Each approach has advantages/drawbacks that could be favoured for selected purposes, but additional work is required to evaluate them on clinical cases.

Lower respiratory tract disease in Thoroughbred racehorses: analysis of endoscopic data from a UK training yard.
There has been much research directed at potential causative agents and the epidemiology of lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD), but few reports of the clinical progression and outcome. ⋯ Endoscopic examinations permit longitudinal tracking of lower respiratory tract disease in Thoroughbred racehorses. A prolonged duration of disease, sometimes extending for months, can be expected in a small proportion of cases, some of which appear to be refractory to treatment. There is a clear need for evidence-based analysis of treatment regimes to assist clinicians in decision making when managing disease in both individual and group situations.
