Long-term effects of gastrectomy in patients with spirometry-defined COPD and patients at risk of COPD: a case-control study.
Comorbidities are characteristic of COPD. However, little is known about the secondary manifestations of COPD in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, we aimed to explore the long-term effects of gastrectomy in patients with spirometry-defined COPD or those at risk of COPD. ⋯ We concluded that nutritional insufficiency in patients with COPD (or those at risk of COPD) who previously underwent gastrectomy might lead to hyperinflation and consequently, decreased exercise capacity.

Lung function decline rates according to GOLD group in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Since the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) groups A-D were introduced, the lung function changes according to group have been evaluated rarely. ⋯ There was no significant difference in lung function decline rates according to the GOLD groups. Prior classification using postbronchodilator FEV1 predicts decline in lung function better than does the new classification.

Budgetary impact analysis on funding smoking-cessation drugs in patients with COPD in Spain.
The aim of the study was to assess the budgetary impact of funding smoking-cessation drugs in COPD patients in Spain. A hybrid model (cohort and Markov) was developed for a 5-year time horizon. Only approved cessation drugs (varenicline, bupropion, and nicotine replacement therapy) were considered. ⋯ Accumulated total additional savings in 5 years (€4.3 million) compared with the scenario without reimbursement was shown. Sensitivity analyses supported the results robustness. Funding smoking-cessation drugs in COPD patients seems to be an efficient option and a National Health System drug reimbursement scheme would represent a cost-saving policy in Spain.

Symptoms and impact of COPD assessed by an electronic diary in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD: psychometric results from the SHINE study.
Symptoms, particularly dyspnea, and activity limitation, have an impact on the health status and the ability to function normally in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ The eDiary was found to be valid, reliable, and responsive. The high correlations obtained between "shortness of breath" and the ratings of "bother" and "difficulty with activities" confirmed the relevance of this symptom in patients with COPD. Future studies will be required to explore further psychometric properties and their ability to differentiate between COPD treatments.

Variants in multiple genes polymorphism association analysis of COPD in the Chinese Li population.
It is known that the contribution of risk alleles to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may vary between populations. Further, previous studies involving various ethnic groups have revealed associations between COPD and genetic polymorphisms in families with sequence similarity 13, member A (FAM13A), micro-RNA 2054 (MIR2054), SET domain containing protein 7 (SETD7), ring finger protein 150 (RNF150), hedgehog interacting protein (HHIP), and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA). Our objective was to explore the association between these gene polymorphism and COPD in members of Chinese Li minority population. ⋯ Our results were the first time to reveal that SNPs from FAM13A (rs7671167), SETD7 (rs17050782), and a haplotype of VEGFA ("GGCGC") are potential susceptibility loci associated with increased COPD risk in Chinese Li minority population.
