Pulmonary Rehabilitation Exercise Prescription in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Review of Selected Guidelines: AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CARDIOVASCULAR AND PULMONARY REHABILITATION.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with disabling dyspnea, skeletal muscle dysfunction, and significant morbidity and mortality. Current guidelines recommend pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) to improve dyspnea, functional capacity, and quality of life. ⋯ The 3 guidelines have been published by the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society, and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. In addition to summarizing these 3 guidelines, this statement describes clinical applications, explores areas of uncertainty, and suggests strategies for providing effective exercise training, given the diversity of guidelines and patient complexity.

Six-Minute Walk Test Distances in Fast-Track and Traditional Cardiac Rehabilitation: A 3-YEAR DATABASE REVIEW.
Home-based and center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) have demonstrated similar levels of risk factor reduction. Cardiac rehabilitation models with fewer exercise sessions may be as effective as traditional models. This study reviewed a community phase II CR database from 2007 to 2010. ⋯ Six-minute walk test distance outcomes were not different for subjects undergoing once-weekly or twice-weekly supervised CR exercise sessions. CR models with fewer supervised exercise sessions may provide similar functional outcomes to traditional CR models.

Impact of pulmonary rehabilitation on hospitalizations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among members of an integrated health care system.
The evidence regarding the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on health care resource use remains limited. This retrospective study evaluated the effects of PR on the primary outcome of all-cause hospitalizations and secondary outcomes of other health care use, exercise capacity, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and body weight in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a large integrated health care system. ⋯ Our finding that participation in PR is associated with reductions in hospitalizations corroborates previous studies. A notable strength of this study is the capture of complete utilization data.

Randomized Controlled TrialBalance Training in Pulmonary Rehabilitation: EFFECTS ON PSYCHOSOCIAL OUTCOMES.
Balance impairment in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with a worsening of quality of life (QOL) as related with fatigue perception, depression, and anxiety. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of balance training included in pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on QOL, fatigue perception, depression, and anxiety in patients with COPD. ⋯ Balance training added to PR improved health-related QOL, fatigue, and mental health in patients with COPD.

Randomized Controlled TrialInspiratory muscle training in pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on functional capacity, respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, quality of life, and fatigue and dyspnea perception in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). ⋯ Inspiratory muscle training promotes significant improvements in respiratory muscle strength and functional capacity, thus resulting in a reduction of dyspnea during activities of daily living and less fatigue in PAH patients. Inspiratory muscle training is a clinically practical treatment for PAH without any complications.
