The myodural bridge (MDB) is a dense connective tissue structure that connects the subocciptal musculature to the spinal dura mater. The purpose of this study was to clarify morphological evolution characteristics and compositional changes in the fibrous structures of MDB during its growth and development in the atlanto-occipital interspace. For this, histological sections from Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (age, E17 to adulthood) were stained with Masson's Trichrome and Picrosirius Red. ⋯ This study also showed that in postnatal rats, MDB was mainly composed of type I collagen fibers. By observing the development of MDB in SD rats, the function of MDB can be further understood. This study provides a morphological basis for future functional studies involving the MDB.

Thyroid surgery is the primary treatment for substernal goiters, and iatrogenic injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RNL) is always a risk. The literature suggests that iatrogenic lesions of the RNL post resection of substernal goiter are not equally distributed, being more frequent on the right recurrent laryngeal nerve (R-RLN) in comparison to the left recurrent laryngeal nerve (L-RLN). The relative paucity of basic anatomical and clinical reportages on R-RLN iatrogenic injuries and on the developmental factors that may help explain its higher incidence justifies this study's undertaking. ⋯ Our analysis showed that the R-RLN seems to be anatomically more vulnerable to injury due to the embryological underpinnings addressed in this review, R-RLN = 64.29% (n = 9) and L-RLN = 35.71% (n = 5). Pathological factors like malignancy and size of the mass are relevant issues to be considered. The knowledge of anatomical landmarks and embryological development of the thyroid and associated structures can improve our understanding and teaching of surgical anatomy, thus helping prevent and reduce the number of iatrogenic injuries on right RLNs.

Multidetector computed tomographic (CT) anatomy was used to evaluate the lungs of 10 loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) without pulmonary disease, in order to provide a baseline of turtle lung anatomy by CT imaging. In all patients, in this retrospective anatomic study, the CT datasets were carefully evaluated for assessment of the bronchial tree morphology and branching pattern, of the arborization pattern of pulmonary arteries and veins and of the bronchoarterial-bronchovenous diameter ratios. ⋯ With the increasing availability of advanced imaging tools for wildlife animal patients, a detailed CT anatomy background is required to decipher correctly the pathologic respiratory conditions of sea turtles. Sigma 1 receptor (σ1R) is a non-opioid receptor that modulates pain perception and is strongly expressed in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. We studied the changes in the expression of σ1R in different sub-populations of DRG neurons during the first 48 hr in a carrageenan-induced inflammation rat model, with σ1R being a possible base for the development of neuropathic pain after inflammation. Twenty Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups (N = 4 in each group): the control (C) group was sacrificed immediately; all other animals received an intraplantar injection of 0.1 mL 2% carrageenan and were sacrificed in 6, 12, 24 or 48 hr after the injection and DRGs were collected and processed for immunohistochemistry. σ1R fluorescence intensity decreased slightly but significantly in up to 24 hr post-carrageenan injection in all sub-populations of DRG neurons (ib4+; ib4- medium, ib4- large and ib4- in total; P < 0.05 - P < 0.001), with the exception of the ib4- small neurons (<25 μm; P > 0.05). ⋯ The presented results may contribute to further understanding of role of σ1R in the development of peripheral sensitization during inflammation. They may also be valuable for the therapeutic application of σ1R antagonists, particularly in the adjustment of the antagonist's dosage in a particular time window. The triceps brachii muscle occupies the posterior compartment of the arm in humans and has three heads. The lateral and medial heads originate from the humerus and the long head arises from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula. All heads form a common tendon that inserts onto the olecranon and the deep antebrachial fascia on each side of it. ⋯ We conclude that the primary motor branch to the LHT arises from the radial nerve but axillary/posterior cord innervations occur occasionally. We suggest the development of a standard methodology for further studies. Anat Rec, 301:473-483, 2018. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
