Partite hallux sesamoid bones: Relationship with sesamoid bones at other metatarsophalangeal joints.
Partite hallux sesamoids are clinically meaningful but their association with other sesamoids is not clear. The objective was to relate the prevalence of the partite hallux sesamoid bones to sesamoid bones at other metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. We conducted a retrospective review of plain radiographs of 7946 adult feet between November 2005 and September 2012 to identify partite hallux sesamoids and sesamoids at other MTP joints. ⋯ Partition of hallux sesamoid bones is a developmental variation, it can coexist with sesamoids at other MTP joints following a certain pattern; and its prevalence rate is almost twice higher in feet without than with extra MTP sesamoids. Animal models are used to examine the results of experimental spinal cord injury. Alterations in spinal cord blood supply caused by complex spinal cord injuries contribute significantly to the diversity and severity of the spinal cord damage, particularly ischemic changes. ⋯ This provides researchers with a valuable tool for the selection of the most suitable animal model for their experiments in the study of spinal cord ischemia and provides clinicians with a basis for the appropriate translation of research work to their clinical applications. This study uses Ki-67 and doublecortin (DCX) immunohistochemistry to delineate potential neurogenic zones, migratory pathways, and terminal fields associated with adult neurogenesis in the brains of three microchiropterans. As with most mammals studied to date, the canonical subgranular and subventricular neurogenic zones were observed. Distinct labeling of newly born cells and immature neurons within the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus was observed in all species. ⋯ While the majority of these features have been found in several mammal species, the large number of DCX immunolabeled cells found between the RMS and the piriform cortex and the presence of DCX immunostained axons in the anterior commissure are features only observed in microchiropterans and insectivores to date. The myodural bridge was proposed initially in 1995. The myodural bridge is a connective tissue bridge that connects a pair of deep muscles at the suboccipital region to the dura mater. There have been numerous studies concerning the morphology and function of the myodural bridge. ⋯ This connection may act as a pump to provide cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation at the occipitocervical junction. The accumulated data indicate that there is significant genetic heterogeneity underlying the etiology of silicosis. Recent reports have revealed that microRNAs (miRNAs) play an important role in regulating pulmonary fibrosis. This study, therefore, aimed to identify some miRNAs as biomarkers for silicosis, and to explore the early diagnostic value of biomarkers for silicosis. ⋯ The sensitivity and specificity for miR-181a at a cut-off value of 1.8917 were 70% and 75%, respectively, whereas, those for miR-19a at a cut-off value of 3.6828 were 95% and 95%, respectively.
