Patterns of health services use associated with Veterans Affairs outpatient substance-use treatment.
This study examined service use and costs associated with receiving intensive outpatient (IOP) substance-use treatment. ⋯ Results indicated that more intense IOP treatment is associated with increases in subsequent psychiatric, substance-use, medical, and total outpatient care and decreases in expensive inpatient care.

Randomized Controlled TrialAt-risk drinking and drug use among patients seeking care in an emergency department.
This study reports the frequency of alcohol use and associated tobacco and drug use among emergency department (ED) patients, in order to increase physician awareness and treatment of women and men seeking care in ED settings. ⋯ This study supports systematic alcohol screening of women and men seen in EDs and suggests that patterns of alcohol and drug use vary by age and gender.
