Approach to Pandemic 2009 influenza: first report from a main referral hospital for Pandemic H1N1 influenza care in Iran.
Pandemic H1N1 influenza A (pdmH1N1) was a major health threat worldwide. ⋯ This study provided insight on the effectiveness of oseltamivir in treating pandemic influenza A, as well as possible adverse reactions to the drug. The study further drew attention to a variety of pdmH1N1 complications, in particular secondary bacterial pneumonia. We also determined that 2009 influenza A (H1N1) infection-related critical illness and mortality affected fewer elderly than younger patients. Additionally, it was shown that our approach to patients with suspected Influenza A/H1N1 virus in our hospital was compatible with World Health Organization pandemic flu guidelines in our country.

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of bacteraemic melioidosis in a teaching hospital in a northeastern state of Malaysia: a five-year review.
Melioidosis is an important public health problem causing community acquired sepsis in the northeastern part of Malaysia. ⋯ The wide range of clinical presentations and the fatal outcomes of melioidosis require a high level of suspicion among physicians to develop an early appropriate therapy and reduce the mortality rate.

Comparative StudyTopical treatment of Klebsiella pneumoniae B5055 induced burn wound infection in mice using natural products.
Burn wound infection remains the principal cause of death in burn patients. Efficacy of honey and aloe vera gel was evaluated in the treatment of burn wound infection induced with Klebsiella pneumoniae B5055 and their efficacy was compared with an isolated and well-characterized Klebsiella specific phage Kpn5. ⋯ The results of this study strongly suggest that phage Kpn5 has therapeutic value in treating burn wound infection in mice as a single topical application of this phage was able to rescue mice from infection caused by K. pneumoniae B5055 in comparison to multiple applications of honey and aloe vera gel.

Conjugate vaccines for enteric fever: proceedings of a meeting organized in New Delhi, India in 2009.
Enteric fever is responsible for significant morbidity in South Asia and high prevalence of severe disease is seen in children under two years of age. Effective typhoid vaccines are available, but they cannot be used for children under two years of age and also have some limitations in older age groups. Participants supported development of a Salmonella Typhi conjugate vaccine able to induce effective, long-lasting immunity in young children. ⋯ To ensure good immunization coverage, the conjugate vaccine could be administered either to young infants, concomitantly with infant EPI vaccines, or to older infants, concomitantly with measles vaccine, currently given at 9 to 12 months. The need for new combination vaccines, containing both EPI and typhoid antigens, was discussed as a tool to increase coverage and reduce the number of injections and priority conflicts in a crowded infant vaccination schedule. However, stand-alone enteric fever conjugate vaccines would allow more flexibility to immunize different age groups and therefore should be rapidly developed.
