Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has increased its prevalence in females. Women have been described as more symptomatic. There are few studies considering gender differences in COPD. ⋯ There were more former smokers among men (68.7% vs. 15.7%, p < 0.001), men had a lower FEV1 (48.7% ± 15.7 vs. 58.2% ± 10.9 of theoretical, p < 0.001) and higher frequency of ischemic heart disease (16.4% vs. 5.9%, p = 0.04). Women showed a higher prevalence of COPD without exposure to smoke cigarette (64.7% vs. 7.2%, p < 0.001), more symptoms of anxiety and depression (p = 0.004) and less frequently altered ABI (20% vs. 41. 6%, p = 0.01). There were differences in COPD with respect to sex with more severe pulmonary and cardiovascular disease in men and more symptoms of anxiety and depression in women.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
[Starting an insulin regimen with insulin lispro mix 25 versus glargine insulin for type 2 diabetes].
Information on starting insulin regimens in specific populations with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is limited. This analysis compared efficacy and safety of two starter insulin regimens: insulin lispro mix 25 (LM25) and basal insulin glargine (GL) in patients from Argentina. This post-hoc analysis evaluated 193 insulin-naïve patients who participated in the DURABLE trial 24-week initiation phase. ⋯ Both groups increased body weight, although the gain was higher at endpoint with LM25 (6.35 kg vs. 4.23 kg, P < 0.001). No differences in hypoglycemia rates were observed between groups, and no serious adverse events were reported for either group. In this subgroup from Argentina, LM25 demonstrated greater improvement in glucose control with similar risk of hypoglycemia and more weight gain than GL.

Observational Study
[Venous thromboembolism prevention in non-surgical adult patients admitted in a general hospital].
Adult patients hospitalized for a non-surgical condition, usually have a high risk of venous thromboembolism and may develop some form of this disease when they do not receive appropriate preventive treatment. The objectives of this prospective, analytical, observational and cross-sectional study were: 1) to determine what percentage of adult patients hospitalized for a non-surgical acute condition at the Hospital de Clínicas José de San Martín, Universidad de Buenos Aires, had indication for preventive thromboprophylaxis, 2) to establish how many of them had been prescribed a preventive treatment of venous thromboembolism, 3) to establish how many of them had been prescribed a preventive treatment of venous thromboembolism without having reasons to justify the treatment. ⋯ A 33.3% of the studied patients had received preventive pharmacological treatment without having a proper indication. In this study, the percentage of patients treated is higher than in those reported in other published observational studies.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. It is characterized by rapid progression and high morbidity and mortality in the absence of early diagnosis and prompt treatment. It was an infrequent disease, but in recent years, its incidence appears to have increased. ⋯ Seven patients had favorable outcome. In conclusion, mucormycosis is a rare disease, but its incidence has increased over the past five years. A good evolution of the patients is linked to early diagnosis and treatment.
