The aim of the "Youth Forum of the DGOU" during the Convention 2010 in Heidelberg was to place a statement concerning the professional politics in the field of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery. The emigration of young German physicians, the occupational image of the Physician Assistant and the quality of the German residency programs in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery we discussed as main topics. The main reason for young German physicians to go abroad is, besides better work conditions and less bureaucracy, the better structured education during residency. ⋯ Additional surveys and interviews among the current generation of residents are needed to further specify the potential goals of such a curriculum. We would like to discuss the future of our speciality with our colleagues. Therefore different communication platforms including our website http://www.jf-dgou.de have been created.

This is a report of a 70-year-old patient with spontaneous pain of the dorsum area of the left foot. A few days later there was a sudden onset of foot drop. First, an idiopathic peroneal palsy was assessed but an MRI showed a cystic tumour near the fibular head. ⋯ Given access to the articular branch, the cyst typically spreads out proximally from the deep peroneal nerve to the common peroneal nerve and to the point of the sciatic nerve. The clinical symptoms are correlated with the extent of cyst propagation. Recommended therapy would include the ligation of the aricular branch, or synovectomy, or resection of the superior tibiofibular joint and decompression of the cyst.

[Is there a bone-preserving bone remodelling in short-stem prosthesis? DEXA analysis with the Nanos total hip arthroplasty].
It has been suggested that the use of a short-stem prosthesis could conserve proximal bone by proximal load transfer. Proximal stress shielding should be reduced, a phenomenon that has been associated with bone resorption around traditional stems. Bone remodelling of a metaphyseal fixed stem (Nanos, Smith & Nephew Int.) was analysed by the dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. ⋯ The desired proximal load transfer of a short-stemmed implant in the metaphyseal region of the proximal femur could not be reached with this device. On the basis of the excellent clinical results of the patients operated with the Nanos short-stem prosthesis we conclude that the component induces bone ingrowth in the lateral/distal region of the proximal femur.
