Serum salusin-β in relation to atherosclerosis and ventricular dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Salusin-β is a newly defined biomarker that plays a role in atherogenesis and in homeostasis. The study aimed to assess serum salusin-β level in relation to atherosclerosis and ventricular dysfunction in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. ⋯ Serum salusin-β may be associated with atherosclerosis and LV dysfunction in T2DM.

COVID-19 disease appear to have been associated with significant mortality amongst doctors and health care workers globally. We explore the various risk factors associated with this occupational risk, especially focusing on India. This may elucidate lessons to protect these frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ COVID-19 has been associated with an increased mortality in doctors and health care workers. Until an effective cure/vaccine is developed, risk assessments at work, mitigating confounding factors, adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) and enhanced protection against infection are necessary to protect health care professionals on the coronavirus frontline. Otherwise this occupational risk can lead to further untimely mortality and become another unintended consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ReviewUse of pioglitazone in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): Boon or bane?
People with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have increased morbidity and mortality due to coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19). It has been speculated that use of pioglitazone might increase such risk. The aim of our brief commentary is to review the safety of pioglitazone in people with T2DM and mild/moderate COVID-19. ⋯ Pioglitazone has more potential for benefit than harm, and can be continued in people with T2DM and mild/moderate COVID-19, unless there are specific contraindications for its use. There is an urgent need to assess clinically relevant outcomes in people with diabetes and COVID-19 based upon baseline antidiabetes therapy, in particular pioglitazone.

ReviewCardiac biomarker-based risk stratification algorithm in patients with severe COVID-19.
Cardiac biomarkers like cardiac troponins and natriuretic peptides are elevated in a substantial proportion of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We propose an algorithmic approach using cardiac biomarkers to triage, risk-stratify and prognosticate patients with severe COVID-19. ⋯ It appears beneficial to triage, risk-stratify, and prognosticate patients with COVID-19 based on the evidence of myocardial injury and the presence of underlying cardiovascular disease. Future research studies are, however, needed to validate these proposed benefits.

COVID-19 is a pandemic, resulting in large number of deaths all over the world. Lack of effective antiviral agents and vaccines pose a major challenge to control this pandemic. ⋯ Reverse quarantine is a promising public health measure to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19.
