Incidence of eclampsia with HELLP syndrome and associated mortality in Latin America.
To describe the maternal outcome among women with eclampsia with and without HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count). ⋯ Eclampsia with HELLP syndrome is a dangerous complication associated with pregnancy. Low platelet count secondary to HELLP syndrome and severe systolic hypertension were independently associated with maternal mortality from eclampsia.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights recently adopted General Comment No 2 to interpret provisions of Article 14 of the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights Women. The provisions relate to women's rights to fertility control, contraception, family planning, information and education, and abortion. ⋯ General Comment No 2 is invaluable in educating all stakeholders-including healthcare providers, lawyers, policymakers, and judicial officers at the domestic level-about pertinent jurisprudence. Civil society and human rights advocates can use the General Comment to render the state accountable for failure to implement its treaty obligations.

Comparative StudyImpact of the introduction of neuraxial labor analgesia on mode of delivery at an urban maternity hospital in China.
To evaluate the association between the introduction of neuraxial (epidural) labor analgesia and mode of delivery in a large urban maternity hospital in China. ⋯ The introduction of epidural analgesia reduced the frequency of cesarean delivery, which improved obstetric and neonatal outcomes.

Coverage and distribution of obstetricians and gynecologists in Nigeria.
To determine the number, regional spread, and population ratio of obstetricians and gynecologists (OB/GYNs) in Nigeria. ⋯ The number of OB/GYNs in Nigeria is inadequate in view of the population size, and coverage varies greatly in different states. Efforts to improve maternal health and reduce the maternal mortality ratio should include more investment in training, engagement, and equitable distribution of OB/GYNs in all parts of the country.

Intraoperative red cell salvage during obstetric surgery in 50 Japanese women.
To determine the clinical usefulness of intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) in obstetrics. ⋯ ICS caused no adverse events among women at elevated risk of peripartum hemorrhage and might be safe for use in obstetrics.
