Spasticity is a frequent complication after severe brain injury, which may impede the rehabilitation process and diminish the patients' quality of life. ⋯ Managing spasticity at first signs could improve rehabilitation of patients with disorders of consciousness and maximize their chances of recovery. In addition, decreasing this trouble could allow a better quality of life for these non-communicative patients.

Cross-cultural adaptation and preliminary test-retest reliability of the Italian version of the Complexity Rehabilitation Scale-Extended (13th version).
In Italy, the lack of appropriate use of intensive rehabilitative services is an acknowledged issue, as demonstrated by periodic epidemiological surveys. Rehabilitation activities are planned without considering the clinical complexity, known to be one of the most fundamental factors able to outline the real patients' needs on recently clinical practice rehabilitation guidelines. Alternative diagnostic systems become, therefore, necessary. For this reason, we would like to propose the Rehabilitation Complexity Scale - Extended version (RCS-E) within intensive rehabilitation units in Emilia Romagna. ⋯ Further statistical validation will assess the Italian RCS-E as a possible instrument for guiding the patients' assignment to the rehabilitation settings that best suit their specific needs. These preliminary data represent the first step through this purpose.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of adding one 15-minute-walk on the day of surgery to fast-track rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized, single-blind study.
Earlier and more intensive physiotherapy exercise after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) enhance recovery, but the best combination of intensity and duration has not been determined. ⋯ A 15-minute walk immediately after recovery from spinal anesthesia did not increase pain in patients with TKA. More intense exercise during this period might improve functional recovery without increasing pain.

Observational StudyDeterminants of outcome in hip fracture: role of daily living activities.
Very few studies have investigated activities of daily living (ADLs) post hip-surgery as a possible determinant of functional outcome after hip fracture. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that, in designing studies on outcome prediction in hip fracture, researchers should include tests assessing performance of basic ADLs as independent variables, as this could allow to identify new prognostic indicators that may be helpful for physicians in managing hip fracture patients post-rehabilitation.

Randomized Controlled TrialMcKenzie training in patients with early stages of ankylosing spondylitis: results of a 24-week controlled study.
It is widely accepted that patient education and regular exercises could improve pain, function and maintain posture in ankylosing spondylitis (AS). ⋯ A specific McKenzie training should be included in the standard-care of AS.
