To compare the difference in white matter volume (WMV) and gray matter volume (GMV) between the comitant strabismus (CS) patients and health controls by voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and the relationship with behavioral performance. A total of 20 patients with comitant strabismus (10 males and 10 females), and 20 healthy subjects (10 males and 10 females) with matched age, sex status underwent magnetic resonance examination. The authors analyzed the original 3D T1 brain images using the VBM module. ⋯ Meanwhile, the WMV was significantly decreased in the brain regions of the left middle temporal gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, left middle temporal gyrus, right precuneus and right premotor cortex in the comitant strabismus patients compared with HCs. Furthermore, the duration of CS was negatively correlated with the GMV values of the left middle temporal pole (r=-0.486, P=0.030). CS caused GMV and WMV atrophy in many brain regions, which may indicate the neural mechanisms of the ocular motility disorders in CS patients.

Scarring is the inevitable consequence of wound repair, which may cause significant physical and mental pain to patients when excessive. Bone morphogenetic protein‑7 (BMP‑7) has been proved to inhibit TGF‑β‑induced fibrosis in various tissues including dermal papilla cells. However, the effect of BMP‑7 on hypertrophic scarring, a common proliferative disorder of dermal fibroblasts, has not been determined. ⋯ Furthermore, activation of the BMP‑7/Smad1/5/8 signaling pathway may have been involved in the inhibitory effects of BMP‑7 on scar formation. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that BMP‑7 may inhibit excessive scar formation via activation of the BMP‑7/Smad1/5/8 signaling pathway. The results present a potential alternative therapeutic strategy for the treatment of hypertrophic scarring.

A previous study of the authors using microarray analysis indicated that the expression of complement component 4 binding protein (C4BP)A is upregulated in essential hypertension (EH) patients, but the association between C4BPA variations and EH has not yet been clearly demonstrated. Since the 5' upstream region is known to serve important roles in the gene expression regulation, the present study aimed to identify and analyze the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the 5' upstream region between the C4BPA gene with EH in a case‑control study among a northeastern Han Chinese population through direct sequencing as well as genotype detection. A total of 822 unrelated participants were included. ⋯ Further analysis indicated that rs73079108 was associated with systolic blood pressure (P<0.001), diastolic blood pressure (P=0.001) and fast blood glucose (FBG) (P=0.021). In addition, rs73079108 GA and GG carriers reported a significant increase in the level of the protein encoded by C4BPA than those of AA carriers. The rs73079108 polymorphism in the 5' upstream region of C4BPA was associated with EH, and rs73079108‑A may be an independent predictor.

Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extract (SBGE) is used in traditional herbal medicine and has also been used clinically to ameliorate the symptoms of various inflammatory diseases and cancer. In women, breast cancer is one of the most common diseases and numerous women succumb to it. The present study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism responsible for the SBGE‑induced apoptosis of MCF‑7 human breast cancer cells. ⋯ However, SBGE had no effect on the expression levels of Fas, FasL or TNF‑α. Furthermore, mitogen‑activated protein kinase and C‑Jun N‑terminal kinase inhibitors inhibited SBGE‑induced cell death. These results suggested that SBGE be considered as an agent for the treatment of breast cancer.

Chrysanthemum indicum Linné extract (CIL) is used in herbal medicine in East Asia. In the present study, gerbils were orally pre‑treated with CIL, and changes of antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) 1 and SOD2, catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in the hippocampal CA1 region following 5 min of transient cerebral ischemia were investigated and the neuroprotective effect of CIL in the ischemic CA1 region was examined. SOD1, SOD2, CAT and GPX immunoreactivities were observed in the pyramidal cells of the CA1 region and their immunoreactivities were gradually decreased following ischemia‑reperfusion and barely detectable at 5 days post‑ischemia. ⋯ Furthermore, it was identified that pre‑treatment with CIL protected the CA1 pyramidal cells in the CA1 region using neuronal nuclei immunohistochemistry and Fluoro‑Jade B histofluorescence staining; the protected CA1 pyramidal cells were 67.5% compared with the sham‑operated animals. In conclusion, oral CIL pre‑treatment increased endogenous antioxidant enzymes in CA1 pyramidal cells in the gerbil hippocampus and protected the cells from transient cerebral ischemic insult. This finding suggested that CIL is promising for the prevention of ischemia‑induced neuronal damage.
