Peer reviewing in intensive care medicine is an evaluation process that promotes a professional understanding of quality and the exchange of experience in intensive care. It will help integrate evidence-based knowledge into the treatment process at an earlier stage and thus improve the quality of intensive care and intensive nursing care. The process is a learning experience for all involved and is highly satisfying to the participants. The exchange of experience is an essential part of quality control.

[Interprofessional education for patient-centred practice: development of outcome-focused competencies for a Bachelor Programme Interprofessional Health Care].
Health care systems in Germany and around the world are faced with demographic change and the need of providing health services in increasingly complex health care surroundings. A highly qualified workforce is needed to face the challenges ahead and to coordinate health care. In addition, there is evidence that interprofessional education strengthens interprofessional collaboration which can lead to improved health outcomes. The University of Heidelberg, Medical Faculty, decided to develop a bachelor programme integrating specific health professions and interprofessional qualifications into the curriculum. The manuscript describes the identification process of the outcome-focused competencies for this bachelor degree. ⋯ A thorough needs assessment was performed setting the foundation for the further development of the curriculum. The identified competencies are in line with the five core competencies defined by the WHO which are necessary for interprofessional collaboration: patient-centred care, partnering, quality improvement, information and communication technology, and public health perspective. The application of the CanMED framework proved to be suitable. It may be used as common terminology to help define interfaces with curricula of other health professions. The interprofessional development of the bachelor programme fostered a deeper understanding between health professionals and can therefore be regarded as a first step in improving interprofessional collaboration.

[Delegation and substitution of specific medical tasks as a future model of health care supply].
Changing health care needs caused by changing demographics lead to an increasing demand for medical and nursing care in Germany. A declining number of general practitioners will soon cause a lack of health care supply in a growing number of regions. Nurses constituting the largest occupational group in the health care system contribute by filling the resulting gap. ⋯ The current nursing curriculum needs to include medical skills and content to reach a qualification status comparable to other European countries. The transition towards a more team-oriented medical care will have to be supervised and evaluated by health services research in both nursing and clinical care. The aim is to also provide a basis for the further development of the relevant socio-legal framework.

[Burdened into the job -- final-year students' empathy and burnout].
Empathy is a central element in daily patient care. The burnout syndrome seems to be a potential factor influencing physicians' empathic behavior negatively. In Germany up to 20 % of practicing physicians experience burnout. So far, there have been no studies measuring empathy and the degree of burnout among final-year medical students in Germany. The aim of the current study was to investigate final-year students' self-reported empathy, burnout and the association of job satisfaction and occupational self-efficacy with regard to potential gender differences. ⋯ Despite high self-rated empathy scores, the experience of burnout symptoms in medical students may begin as early as their final year of studies, where higher levels of burnout are associated with lower self-rated empathy scores. The number of final-year medical students affected by clinically significant burnout (up to 20 %) was just as high as among practicing physicians. Female students were found to be particularly affected. Given the rising numbers of female graduates, this shows that urgent action is required.

[Rationing health care by thresholds for clinical benefit and its acceptance by the German population].
Fair rationing in publicly accessible health care has become a subject of current international debate. One suggestion is to cut reimbursement for any medical intervention below some threshold of small clinical benefit. ⋯ Public acceptance of both types of thresholds has been tested in a population survey. Results are presented and discussed in this paper. (As supplied by publisher).
