Relationship Between Measures of Adiposity, Arterial Inflammation, and Subsequent Cardiovascular Events.
The objective of this study was to evaluate how different measures of adiposity are related to both arterial inflammation and the risk of subsequent cardiovascular events. ⋯ Measures of visceral fat are positively related to arterial inflammation and are independent predictors of subsequent CVD events. Individuals with higher measures of visceral fat as well as elevated arterial inflammation are at highest risk for subsequent CVD events. The findings suggest that arterial inflammation may explain some of the CVD risk associated with adiposity.

Observational StudyCombined Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging of Pre-Existing Coronary Artery Stents: Can Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Reliably Detect Neoatherosclerosis?
Neoatherosclerosis is an emerging phenomenon in which lipid-rich plaques (LRPs) develop within pre-existing stents. This study was undertaken to describe near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and intravascular ultrasound findings in pre-existing stents and to compare NIRS findings in pre-existing stents, in which an increased lipid signal has been speculated to indicate neoatherosclerosis, and NIRS findings in a control group of freshly implanted stents, in which any lipid signal originates from fibroatheroma under the stent. ⋯ URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. ReviewImproving Appropriateness and Quality in Cardiovascular Imaging: A Review of the Evidence.
High-quality cardiovascular imaging requires a structured process to ensure appropriate patient selection, accurate and reproducible data acquisition, and timely reporting which answers clinical questions and improves patient outcomes. Several guidelines provide frameworks to assess quality. This article reviews interventions to improve quality in cardiovascular imaging, including methods to reduce inappropriate testing, improve accuracy, reduce interobserver variability, and reduce diagnostic and reporting errors.

Impaired Right, Left, or Biventricular Function and Resting Oxygen Saturation Are Associated With Mortality in Eisenmenger Syndrome: A Clinical and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Study.
Patients with Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) have better survival, despite similar pulmonary vascular pathology, compared with other patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is useful for risk stratification in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension, whereas it has not been evaluated in ES. We studied CMR together with other noninvasive measurements in ES to evaluate its potential role as a noninvasive risk stratification test. ⋯ Impaired right, left, or biventricular systolic function derived from baseline CMR and resting oxygen saturation are associated with mortality in adult patients with ES. CMR is a useful noninvasive tool, which may be incorporated in the risk stratification assessment of ES during lifelong follow-up.

Left Ventricular Systolic Longitudinal Function as Predictor of Outcome in Patients With Sepsis.
In sepsis, whether the assessment of left ventricular global longitudinal systolic strain (GLS) is feasible and prognostically relevant remains controversial. ⋯ In patients with sepsis assisted in a high-dependency observational unit, feasibility of assessments of left ventricular EF and GLS within 24 h from the hospitalization was acceptable and EF showed no prognostic relevance, whereas GLS showed a correlation with mortality rate potentially relevant in shorter more than in longer follow-ups.
