Comparative Study
Preliminary study of positron emission tomography/computed tomography and plasma osteopontin levels in patients with asbestos-related pleural disease.
The aim of this study was to compare the results of semiquantitative analysis by(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with plasma osteopontin levels in the same asbestos-related pleural disease population. ⋯ PET/CT might be more helpful than plasma osteopontin for distinguishing benign asbestos-related pleural diseases from MPM, and the SUVmax in benign asbestos-related pleural diseases may reflect changes in pleural inflammation.

Case Reports
Asymptomatic paradoxical and symptomatic pulmonary air embolism during central venous catheter insertion.
A 65-year-old man developed respiratory distress during insertion of a central venous catheter (CVC). The presence of gas in the pulmonary trunk and ascending aorta was observed on computed tomography (CT) scans performed immediately after insertion, and paradoxical air embolism (PAE) was diagnosed. There were no symptoms of cerebral or coronary arterial embolism, and the patient was maintained in the same supine position as during CVC insertion. ⋯ No subsequent symptoms of PAE occurred. In this patient with respiratory distress during CVC insertion, CT revealed PAE, and PAE was resolved and systemic arterial embolism did not occur by maintenance of the supine position and O(2) administration. This case also highlights the potential risk for the occurrence of asymptomatic PAE related to CVC insertion.

Multislice computed tomography angiography findings of chronic small bowel volvulus with jejunal diverticulosis.
A volvulus, which is torsion of the bowel and its mesentery, is a medical emergency. Small bowel volvulus rarely occurs in adults, although it has been reported in the presence of small bowel diverticulum. ⋯ We present the multislice CT angiography findings of a 64-year-old woman with chronic intermittent volvulus resulting from jejunal diverticulosis, surgically confirmed. To our knowledge, no similar case has been reported previously in the literature.

Quantitative analysis of brain edema and swelling on early postmortem computed tomography: comparison with antemortem computed tomography.
The aim of this study was quantitatively to analyze brain edema and swelling due to early postmortem changes using computed tomography (CT) scans of the head. ⋯ Early postmortem CT shows mild brain edema but does not show brain swelling.

Comparative Study
High prevalence of vertebral artery tortuosity of Loeys-Dietz syndrome in comparison with Marfan syndrome.
Loeys-Dietz syndrome (LDS) is a connective tissue disease caused by mutations in the genes encoding the transforming growth factor-beta receptor (TGFBR). LDS is associated with aneurysms or dissections of the aorta similar to Marfan syndrome (MFS) as well as arterial tortuosity and aneurysms in the peripheral arteries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the arterial diseases of LDS to differentiate it from MFS. ⋯ The VAT was highly prevalent among LDS patients. Thus, the presence of VAT has the potential to differentiate LDS from MFS.
