Inattentional blindness increased with augmented reality surgical navigation.
Augmented reality (AR) surgical navigation systems, designed to increase accuracy and efficiency, have been shown to negatively impact on attention. We wished to assess the effect "head-up" AR displays have on attention, efficiency, and accuracy, while performing a surgical task, compared with the same information being presented on a submonitor (SM). ⋯ Providing identical surgical navigation on a SM, rather than on a single head-up display, reduced the level of inattentional blindness as measured by detection of unexpected findings. These gains were achieved without any measurable impact on efficiency or accuracy. AR displays may distract the user and we caution injudicious adoption of this technology for medical procedures.

Randomized Controlled TrialA double-blind randomized controlled trial of normal saline, lactated Ringer's, and hypertonic saline nasal irrigation solution after endoscopic sinus surgery.
Nasal douching is commonly performed after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). There is a lack of studies comparing the clinical effect of various douching solutions after ESS. This study investigated the clinical effects of normal saline, lactated Ringer's, and hypertonic saline nasal douching solutions after ESS. ⋯ Douching with lactated Ringer's solution after ESS results in better improvement in sinonasal symptoms, compared with normal saline or hypertonic saline solutions.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of topical anesthetic effects of lidocaine, prilocaine, ropivacaine, and bupivacaine in transnasal fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy.
This study was designed to investigate the topical anesthetic efficacy of four different solutions including lidocaine spray, bupivacaine, ropivacaine, and prilocaine used in patients undergoing transnasal fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopic examination (TFL). ⋯ To provide ideal examination comfort and optimum patient tolerability during TFL evaluation of upper respiratory airway topical lidocaine and prilocaine applications were found to be more efficacious and effective medication for anesthesia of the intranasal mucosa compared with bupivacaine and ropivacaine solutions.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy and safety of sublingual immunotherapy in children aged 3-13 years with allergic rhinitis.
Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is recommended for allergic diseases. However, clinical studies containing evidence-based data of this treatment in young children, which is rarely reported in the literature, are needed. This study was designed to assess the efficacy and safety of SLIT in children, including very young children. ⋯ SLIT is effective and well-tolerated in children with allergic rhinitis 3-13 years old.

Bacteriophage reduces biofilm of Staphylococcus aureus ex vivo isolates from chronic rhinosinusitis patients.
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common organism in recalcitrant chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and is often resistant to traditional antibiotic therapy. Bacteriophages ("phages") are a potential candidate for a new, effective therapy. For phages to be useful in the setting of CRS, two minimum requirements must be presented: (1) phages must be effective against S. aureus biofilms and (2) phages must have a broad spectrum of activity. This study aimed to assess the in vitro activity of a phage cocktail (CockTail of Staphylococcus aureus specific bacteriophage [CT-SA]) against S. aureus biofilms and a broad panel of strains isolated from patients with CRS. ⋯ This study indicates that phage cocktail CT-SA can effectively eliminate S. aureus, in planktonic and biofilm forms, from the great majority of CIs from this hospital setting. In addition, its potential effect in preventing the emergence of BIMs was also established. Thus, CT-SA has the potential to treat S. aureus infection and biofilm in CRS patients.
