The aim of this study was to introduce a new quantification method for 153Sm-ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonate (EDTMP) and 186Re-(tin)1,1-hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate (HEDP) to separately measure bone uptake and soft-tissue retention of these radiopharmaceuticals. ⋯ Bone uptake and soft-tissue retention for both 186Re-HEDP and 153Sm-EDTMP as obtained in this study agree well with the conventional 24-h whole-body retention measurements for these tracers. However, by this new scintigraphic quantification method, bone uptake and soft-tissue retention can be calculated separately, thus providing more detailed kinetic data and potentially improving the dosimetry of these radiopharmaceuticals in, for example, assessment of radiation dosage to bone and bone marrow.

Although carotid shunting is occasionally necessary to prevent cerebral ischemia during carotid endarterectomy, there is no reliable indication for this procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether acetazolamide stress brain-perfusion SPECT can predict the need for carotid shunting during carotid endarterectomy. ⋯ A reduced cerebrovascular reserve can predict the development of cerebral ischemia during carotid clamping. Acetazolamide stress brain-perfusion SPECT may be useful as a complementary method in determining selective carotid shunting during carotid endarterectomy.

Twenty-eight patients (12 men with prostate cancer, 16 women with breast cancer) were included in a phase II trial to evaluate the efficacy of 186Re-hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate (HEDP) on pain from bone metastasis and the toxicity of this agent. ⋯ 186Re-HEDP provides safe symptomatic relief of pain in prostate cancer patients. The benefit of this treatment is less clear in breast cancer patients. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate treatment by 186Re-HEDP at an earlier stage of the disease.

Variable success rates for identifying axillary (AX) sentinel nodes in breast cancer patients using preoperative lymphoscintigraphy have been reported. We evaluated the effects of age, weight, breast size, method of biopsy, interval after biopsy, and imaging view on the success of sentinel node identification and on the kinetics of radiopharmaceutical migration. ⋯ Use of MOVA can improve identification of AX sentinel nodes. Although AX drainage is the predominant pattern, a tumor in any portion of the breast can drain to IM sentinel nodes. Transit time was influenced by breast size. Overall short arrival times with this technique allow sentinel lymph node dissection to be performed on the same day as lymphoscintigraphy.

The aim of this study was to use gastroesophageal and pulmonary scintigraphy to evaluate the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux and airway involvement among patients with posterior laryngitis. ⋯ Most patients with posterior laryngitis had detectable proximal gastroesophageal reflux. Exposure of the proximal part of the esophagus to acid, by setting the stage for microaspiration of gastric material into the larynx, remains a major cause of damage to the laryngeal mucosa. Slowed gastric emptying may be a predisposing factor. Moreover, symptoms such as a dry cough, painful swallowing, or hoarseness may not be reliable predictors of the presence of gastroesophageal reflux or of associated airway involvement.
