Mortality of high-risk orthopaedic oncology patients during the COVID-19 pandemic: A prospective cohort study.
Should the threshold for orthopaedic oncology surgery during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic be higher, particularly in men aged 70 years and older? This study reports the incidence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during, respiratory complications and 30-day mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ With appropriate peri-operative measures to prevent viral transmission, major surgery for urgent orthopaedic oncology patients can continue during the COVID-19 pandemic. These results need validating with national data to confirm these conclusions.

Institutional variation in recovery after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: An opportunity for enhanced recovery pathways.
Variations in care have been demonstrated both within and among institutions in many clinical settings. By standardizing perioperative practices, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways reduce variation in perioperative care. We sought to characterize the variation in cytoreductive surgery (CRS)/heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) perioperative practices among experienced US medical centers. ⋯ Significant variation exists in the perioperative care of patients undergoing CRS/HIPEC at major US academic institutions. These findings provide a strong rationale for the investigation of best practices in CRS/HIPEC patients.

Smoke is generated by energy-based surgical instruments. The airborne by-products may have potential health implications. ⋯ Surgical smoke is the gaseous by-product produced by heat-generating devices in various surgical procedures. Surgical smoke may contain chemicals particles, bacteria, and viruses that are harmful and increase the risk of infection for surgeons and all the team in the operation room due to long term exposure of smoke mainly in coronavirus disease 2019 age. The adapted device described is a very simple and cheaper way to use smoke evacuators attached with the monopolar electrosurgical pen to reduce smoke exposure to the surgical team worldwide.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global health emergency and affected the resources in both the public and private health sectors significantly. The present study aims to assess the impact of the pandemic on the services by the department in the first 3 months since the first COVID case in the region. ⋯ The dilemma of providing cancer surgery services to the patients in this pandemic has been global. Strict measures and guidelines can help to overcome the COVID pandemic time, keeping in mind the locoregional logistics.
